• Hello !

Long time ago, before i arrived in Montreal was a group of Russian Conversation here : http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=25723 but no more active nowadays... I was beginning to organize things privately to train my russian but it seems there is a demand of russian meetings and then well why not creating a meeting or at least giving life again to the old group (if former participants wants to take part again).

So with a russian, an ukrainian and an italian (and a breton) we agreed to create again a russian speaking regular event in Montreal, with couchsurfing, but i will enlarge to meetup as i am not sure we have on couchsurfing so many interested people but anyway !

So the goal would be to speak mainly in Russian (can be exchange Russian-English, Russian-French too, everybody has to find his interest there not only those learning russian), from beginner-level to native-level.
On a regular basis : every week

If you are interested and would like to join or help, say it, at least we can then adapt, we still don't know where (probably in a café, if possible near a park then we have the choice depending on weather of "table or grass") and when :
    - Weekend or evening ? Tuesday ? Thursday ?
    - Early (kind of 5 to 7) or late (8 to 10)
Nothing is decided yet, so depends on your prefferences if you are interested and mainly of your ideas.

    Hi Romain

i'm native russian-speaker. So if need help, let me know.

    Aydin
    Private_message
Hey, Romain, I was actually thinking of the same thing. For me, Thursday would work best, or any weekday. Also, something later, so around 8 to 10.
    Private_message
Great Aydin ! Having Russian native speaker is important i think for such a group otherwise yes we will speak in russian among beginners, but nobody can correct us or we wont be able to share authentic things of the Russian World :D or just our travell experience.

I contacted the two others with who we agreed about organizing this event, then everybody can participate to propose ideas or dates.

I proposed tuesday and thursday cause couchsurfing activities are already imoportant the monday wednesday and friday so better to do that another day, when less events are organised to dont be too much in concurrence with other meetings. Same for weekend, but i would preffer an evening than weekend, weekends are made to move and even if i dont move so much nowadays, i like to still have this liberty that i dont need for evenings.

Early or Late, both are okay for me so my opinion is neutral about that :)

And David i didnt know you have notions of Russian, soon i wont know in what language we have to speak together
    Private_message
    Salut Romain

Now I'm free almost every day in the evenings (after 18h) and all week-ends, except if i go somewehere.

And, exchange of russian to french would be perfect for me as well!

    Private_message
That's a great idea Romain! I just enrolled in a Russian course here in Montreal and did one in Saint Petersburg last February so it will be great to practice with some other CSers! I just can't before 8.30 on Tuesday and Thursday because of the actual course... :)
    Private_message
Great so it seems to fit with more people from 8 to 10, doesnt matter if you are a bit late. I just remembered that there is a conversation group of the russian club on thursdays in McGill but they are now on holidays from may to september. Which means that if we succeed to plan an event which would survive more than 2 month, it would maybe be better to set it up on tuesdays.

So first date will be Tuesday the 19th of June at 20h00, which let us a bit of time to plan "where", "who", "how" etc :)

If nobody disagrees with that ;)
    Private_message
Ah and about where ! When searching a bit :
    - Troika is a russian bar/restaurant on crescent
I will visit it in the week, im affraid its expensive with such location and not typically russian but anyway if the bar part is cool and quiet we can try to organise there.
-Bar Sova the only other russian bar i found, on cote des neiges, near the maxi so very unpractical by public transportation ... so i think we will forget about xD

Otherwise we can go to to "slavic places" not necessarily russian, like Café Prague near the Outremont station or still better located : Pekarna, a slovenian cake shop at Atwater station !

And about other slavics, do we make a mainly russian meeting or maybe we can do like the latinos meetup of the sunday which is not just in spannish but in portuguese too, so would be more a slavic meetup and if some people come to speak polish for example, they are welcome too. What do you think about ?
    Private_message
I'm interested too! Not a native russian speaker, but I am afraid I will lose the little I have.
    Private_message
It's the case of many of us, so be welcome !

Event has been created : http://www.couchsurfing.org/activity/view/7IU2D0/1st-russian-slavic-languages-meeting, so all of you, please join if you plan to come ;) Спасибо !
    Private_message
unfortunately i won't be able to join u this time
    Private_message
Okay maybe next time then ;)
    Private_message
Д-day is coming, see you all tommorow for the first event woohoo :D Budeme hovorit slavsky jazyky !
    Private_message
    Hey!
Do you think you'll keep those meetings going ?
I just saw it and unfortunetely can not take part tomorrow, but if you make other appointements i'd like to join :) Can I even my Russian is really basic ? ahaha
    Private_message
    hey,

i guess there will be russian clases during a long period...But if u want, i propose to change my russian to ur french or english :)

    Aydin
    Private_message
Well yes the goal is to keep this event every week ! But it is still not sure ...
First one should be a success because it's the first one, an event like this didn't appear for long, second one should be too as some people who couldn't come the first time will maybe finally be able to join, but what about 3rd, 4th etc it just depends on you :)

What i would like is that the event survives without needing to organise it, a bit like the German Stammtisch of the Wednesday evenings, no organisator just people know that if they go at that time and place they will find other speakers and having a talk.

So Laurence you are welcome for next times sure, whatever your level. Even my own level is pretty basic in Russian, more intermediate in czech, but i took lessons again and study hard, and this meeting will help to practice regularly and with time it should be fine i hope :) and maybe same for other people.

But before making a regular event every week we need a place where we can do it every week, this week it was chosen a bit random, i don't remember how big it is so i didn't try to have a maximum of persons there, i keep some stocks forr later (if we are less and less every week i can post the event to the groups of the montreal russian community or on meetup etc) then the meeting can survive :)
    Private_message
It was great ! I love such intercultural meetings where somebody speaks in russian, somebody else answers in english then another answer in polish, requestioned in czech to be answered in french ahah !

So let's continue it. The day and time won't move, it fits many people which was something difficult, but there is still a question about the location :
The place where we were was good, good cakes but it's more a café than a bar and some wanted to take a beer, well if everybody preffers to do in a bar than in a café there is no problem for me, my only question is "which one ?" I let you two days to answer this question, otherwise next one will be temporarily in the same place the time we agree about a new location for the following meetings :)
    Private_message
For Russian, there is La Caverne on CDN & Queen-Mary.

Other option for a meeting, BurritoVille ou Touski.
    Private_message
    Hi Romain
I think we should meet at the same place and we can talk about it. There are a lot of nice places ( bar, cafe) between Atwater and Guy.
    Private_message
Hey Blokes, i had another idea for the next events, as there are many beginners/false-beginners in russian, what do you think about starting at 19h with one hour for beginners helping each other with their basic russian (natives welcome to help) and then from 20h to 22h the meeting itself, to practice conversation what ever your level in any slavic languages.
    ?

It's not for that week but if there is enthusiasm for that we can do that next time, if not, forget about it :D
    Private_message
Okay the new idea is implemented, see you all on tuesday ;) :
    http://www.couchsurfing.org/activity/view/8L2XA5/3rd-russian-slavic-languages-meeting
Still in the cake shop i visited some bar but didnt find anygood one, so it will be here during still a long time :) If you have an idea of bar, we can move there after the meeting at 22h to see if it is : Good/Quiet/Big enough for us :)
    Private_message
I just thought of something that would be very helpful for the beginner Russian speakers. When I taught English in Germany, I played Go Fish, a card game, with the younger kids. I'll bring some cards to the next meeting and we can play something.

I'm trying to find a Russian game, though. The game would preferably be one with lots of talking, but mainly repeating the same phrases or variations of the same phrases. Also, it shouldn't be too fast. I found a game called Durak, but it doesn't seem like you talk much in this game. Does anyone know a Russian game that would be suitable? Is there a Russian version of Go Fish?
    Private_message
Excellent idea ! We can try to see with internet, but even if its like a monopoly in russian it could be fun, its not too difficult to play things like "ja kupaju tebe ulica arbat" ahaha or the stupid game "Qui est ce?" for children could help beginners for words like "does he have a moustache" or things like that that i dont even know in russian. Yes yes yes great idea ! So either finding games in russian or some games with nothing or almost written and then we can just communicate in russian :)

(We will avoid trivial poursuit for the moment maybe :D)
    Private_message
Hi Romain! When will be the next meeting? I'll be in Montreal from 5th july for 1 month. I'm in!
    Private_message
    Hi Romain,

I have courses of french every evening till the end of august in CSDM, thus I wont be able to join u. Sorry for that.

    Aydin
    Private_message
Aydin then maybe in September if the meeting survives :) and Katerina it should be every Tuesday so you are welcome to join ;)
    Private_message
The hour between 19h and 20h was bad idea, so let'S remove it and go back to the normal 20h-22h meetings :)

I created a permanent subject then no more need to send the event every week i will just remind here on the topic once a week and update the dates of meetings sometimes even if it's not necessarily as it's every tuesday at the same time :)

If any modification happens we can modify the event but it seems more obvious that it will be every week like that. And i wrote till end of August but i will extend that later if the group survives, and to survive it just need all of you russian and slavic speakers to come regularly :)

For the hour between 19h-20h for beginners which doesnt exist anymore, if you are a beginners and need advice/books/etc you can write me a message and we can meet earlier than 20h to speak about that and helping you, otherwise normal time of start is now again 20h :)
    Private_message
Hey Francis ! I came once to your last projection of russia movie in McGill. I was waiting to have launched correctly the meeting before advertising on the Russian club, but that's planned :)

(Ah i really have to finish to prepare my Cyrillic Keyboard Layout for Canadian Keyboards)
    Private_message
Russian and Slavic meeting is tommorow, don't forget to come ;)

If you know some other speakers not on couchsurfing, they are welcome too, i will try to come in advance so if you have any idea about organisation or if you are a total beginner needing advice, we can meet before the official conversation time :)

Do zajtra ! Doufam že budete mnoho :D
    Private_message

    Private_message
Because some don't speak russian like the two slovenians of this evening :) It's not just russian. English is just the most understood language, but french version of the event is at work.
    Private_message

12 persons last time we are on the good way :) So dont forget to come this tuesday http://www.couchsurfing.org/meetings.html?mid=170730 it is even translated in French now ! If somebody wants to propose a translation in russian, i will edit the message too.
    Private_message
    http://www.couchsurfing.org/meetings.html?mid=170730

New record last time 16 persons, that was perfect so you can join tommorow :)
    Private_message
Well next week i cannot come, i go to Kino (Batman mwahaha) so does somebody can/want to organise or do i cancel the meeting of July 31st ?
    Private_message
No other organisator, okay, so no meeting this July 31st, let's meet the August 7th for the next Russian meeting :)
    Private_message
Okay the Russian and Slavic meeting is back on Tuesday ! Come to practice or to speak, while eating a good cake :)
    Private_message
I hope too, it depends if people continue to join every week, but still nothing sure for the moment about the survival of the group :)
    Private_message
I'll be there at 8.30 after my Russian class! :)
    Private_message

    Private_message
Great meeting yesterday!! Had a lot of fun discerning the semantics of макароны... :D
    See you next Tuesday!
    Private_message
    1) Indeed Matteo yesterday was lot of fun i really highly appreciate this meeting and the people who join it :) Despite most of the initial members of the core of the group left Montreal, i thin we succeded to build another core for this group which comes regularly and without which it wouldnt be possible to welcome the irregular ones. So I have hope again for the future of the group even if we were just 9, at least we had lot lot of fun and regularity comes from these persons who come every week or every two weeks :)

    Private_message
    Hi,

I am Russian and am looking to meet people! I'll do my best to come to the next meeting.
    Private_message

    Private_message
im russian & coming to montreal on friday for the wEnd - any takers???? :P
    Private_message
Wow lot of new people plannig to join this week, well you are all welcome, event has been updated : http://www.couchsurfing.org/meetings.html?mid=170730un to see i'm not the only one in Montreal who practice more Russian and German than the usual French&English :D

And well well well, start of a new debate :

September is coming little by little, and it's time to speak about the future of this meeting, it seems it will survive, enough people are coming every week and a little core comes every week, that's what we needed !

So i'm asking to all of you these questions :
    1) Is 20h-22h still the time which fits with everybody or should we (from September) move the meeting a bit earlier from 18h or 19h (With possibility to move to another place : bar/restaurant/festival/any event in a second time).
    2) Pekarna is a good location (Centrally located+not noisy+some cheap stuffs+par of the staff is russian) but maybe little if the number of people increases, so once again if you have any idea of good place :
    - CHEAP : nobody should have to pay more than 2$
    - CENTRALLY LOCATED : between Berri Uqam and Lionel Groulx is ideal
    - BIG ENOUGH : to host us
    - POLITE : in some meetups we can see waiter coming and forcing every single person to buy something right now, let's avoid such areas.
    - CALM : not the bars with loud music (so numerous in Montreal)

    Do vtornik druzja !
    Private_message
Yes there will be a meeting again next Tuesday, you are welcome !

And Manuel indeed, it's a good place to meet some russian speakers, i've seen that ;). Could be a subject of debate for next Tuesday too.

    Private_message
Yes that day and yes same place :)

Tak budeme hovorit po slovensky, vitaj !
    Private_message

I updated the event http://www.couchsurfing.org/meetings.html?mid=170730 and once again if you have something to propose, don't hesitate.

So see you guys on Tuesday ! And by the way : don't forget that next weekend is Ukrainian festival : http://www.couchsurfing.org/activity/view/CFCT5F/festival-ukrainien-ukrainien-festival if you want to join, i will for sure go there, as much as possible :) It should be great !

And finally, we are thinking about a little dinner in Pogrebok (a russian restaurant on Côte des Neiges where russian live music is played !) for Friday the 14th of September (to keep time to organise this). So if you are interested in joining, just write me a private message or tell me during the meeting, then i can make the reservation of the good number of people. If you speak russian or just want to discover russian cuisine or russian music you are welcome :)
    Private_message

So let's meet again on Tuesday for normal meeting, but another Extra in a Russo-Georgian Restaurant is planned for next weeks.

An event has even been created on facebook for the meeting : https://www.facebook.com/events/447589945286756/ in order to inform more people about this meeting. Feel free to join if you so desire.

    Cheer!

i just started studying russian and would love to be part of this group!
    Private_message
Well you are welcome Marie, you can come to practice the little russian you learnt till now.

Though we have met two kind of beginners :
    - Those who were motivated/dared to speak, who succeeded to take actively part in the group even if they didnt speak that much Russian, were practicing the few they knew and learning new stuffs too, even when they arrived knowing nothing, not even the alphabet. It even often happened that some kind russian privately helped them.
    - Those who were bored, as they couldnt understand anything, and who didnt dare to ask questions etc. We tried to integrate them but even speaking english 40% of the time for them, they were bored anyway the 60% of the time speaking russian and usually didnt come twice.

So by the way, i up the subject as we meet again on Tuesday :)

But i'm thinking then exceptionnaly to meet at the Café Prague after Christmas (just for once) and i need to find another original location for after new year, and in january we should be back in Pekarna :)

    Private_message
Nowadays no polish unfortunately, one came regularly at the beginning and still show up sometimes but only like once every two months.
    Private_message
hi, i would like to come - but maybe they should be 18:00 not 20:00 so people can come right after work...right now its a bit inconvenient to go home and then leave again... :)
    Private_message
The problem now is that people are used to the place and the time, changing time would attract some new ones, but we would loose some other ones. I personally don't really care, but when we created the group there were more people thinking "let's have the time to eat before" than people thinking "practical to go after work" and i can understand both point of view. Many people have shown their interest but cannot come on Tuesday and would prefer the weekend, so i was thinking about making some other exceptional ones like once a month on Friday evenings, why not from 18h00.

Hi, very interesting group. When do you meet the next time?
Do you have some specific subjects to discuss during the meetings, or you just practicing the language?
For those who know only few russian words: валенки, матрёшка, шапка-ушанка, самовар, водка, русская баня и "Господя прости нас грешных", can they come also to those meetings?

Next time on Tuesday (20h00 but i can maybe give a try once at 18h00 Elina, i asked on the facebook group if it would be interesting for others than you Elina). We have no subject, we are free to speak about whatever we want :) (Or whatever we can speak about depending on our levels). You can come to the meeting, even if you know just a little bit but some people have been bored in such situations, to just listen without understanding, or to speak in english only once in a while.

Hello Russian language enthusiasts and professionals!
I would like to invite you to my balalaika concert which will take place on March 31 (all details are on http://stringsandkeys.com/).
This is a unique chance in Montreal to see this Russian folk instrument in action. After the concert, Russian food will be served.
Hope to see you all there!
