• Hi, I'm a Japanese PhD student in linguistics and also a language teacher / material developer. I was thinking of taking the idea from the Spanish conversation group and starting a (free) Japanese conversation group kind of thing in Wellington?
Maybe we can go to a cafe or bar and practise speaking Japanese? If we can find several Japanese native speakers, we can also do Japanese-English language exchange? Wondering if there is anyone interested? Any ideas / suggestions welcome.

    Cheers, Tatsuya

I don't know if they still do much, but there is always this group https://www.facebook.com/groups/130186947035933/?fref=ts

Hi, I would also be keen! I was just trying to find something like this the other day. I'm going to Japan for a holiday in June and would love some speaking practice. I studied Japanese at uni but have forgotten rather a lot

Thanks for your responses guys. Maybe we can have our fist meeting later this month. Would 22 (Fri) or 23 (Sat) work for you? Perhaps we should go to a bar because research suggests that people learn a foreign language better when they consumed a bit of alcohol :)

Hahaha. A bar might be a good idea then :). Unfortunately I can't make those dates though, I'm away on holiday from 14 - 24 March

This sounds like a great idea. I studied for a bit a few years back, but I'm sure I've forgotten most of it. Would be keen to get in some practice.

I'm keen as beans. Could do either night at this stage :-)

Great! I didn't know there were so many Japanese learners in Wellington. Where have you been hiding? If you are interested, please visit the following URL and indicate your availability: http://whenisgood.net/nihongo_welly

I'll choose the date & time that is convenient for most, if not all, people. よろしく! Tatsuya

Any idea about where to meet up? Preferably, we need somewhere CBD-ish, with reasonably priced drinks, and quiet (so that we don't have to scream when talking)! Hashigozake comes to my mind (http://www.hashigozake.co.nz/index.html), but you Wellingtonians probably know better than me, so any ideas / suggestions welcome!

@Alice I hope you are aware that June is the rainy season in Japan!

    @Alexander Another Shakespeare enthusiast, yay!

@Monique I have a sneaking suspicion that I've already met your flatmate...

Thanks, Alexander. Yes, Kazu Yakitori Bar also sounds good. I think it's one of the few places in Wellington that offers チューハイ (the other one being Kazu on Tory Street). Both Hashigozake and Kazu Yakitori Bar have Japanese staff, so maybe we can even practise ordering stuff in Japanese!

Right now, it looks like 5pm on 22 (Fri) March or 5pm on 31 (Sun) March seems to work for most people. If you are interested in joining but haven't indicated your availability, please do so by
visiting the following URL : http://whenisgood.net/nihongo_welly

If your availability has changed after submitting your responses, just send a message to me.

This event is non-exclusive, so bring your friends (CS or not), workmates, flatmates, or even in-laws, provided, of course, that they are studying or speak Japanese!

Sorry I couldn't make it! Keen for the next one though.

Tatsuya - Haha yeah I do know it's the rainy season. But for other reasons it's the best time for me to go. As compensation I'm having a beach holiday in Malaysia on the way home :)
