ABOUT ME

Erm... OK, I guess I can be a little shy and introverted, although that aspect of me seems to vanish once I've got to know people. I tend to get bored doing the same things in the same places for too long and feel like I could always be doing more with my time then I am. I have realised over the last few years that I love the feeling of travelling; heading somewhere almost unknown to find out what I can see and experience there. I guess like most people I like to socialise but sometimes really value having my own space. I like to try new things although I can be very apprehensive about doing something new, even if I really want to do it; sometimes I need a bit of a push, but as time goes on I think I'm getting braver.

I guess the thing I'm most interested in at the moment is travelling, visiting places that I never even dreamed could exist, taking in as many wonders as there are to explore. Some of the other things that I enjoy include music (mainly listening to ska and punk, as well as playing the bass and to a lesser extent the guitar) and really anything that can be done outdoors. Even if I don't have any particular skills or experience in something I'm still normally more than happy to try it, especially if it means I get to share the experience with friends. The thing that I seem to spend the most time doing at the moment however is studying, I've been learning Chinese for just over 2 years and am hoping one day to really master it, although at the moment that point seems to be getting farther and farther away.

For 22 years I guess I didn't really go anywhere or do anything particularly interesting (apart from a trip with my college to Morocco at 17 which was utterly amazing) but in the last 2 years or so I have seen some things that made me wonder how anything like them could exist. The bizarrely perfect landscape which surrounds Yangshuo near Guilin was my first taste of the simply jaw dropping scenery that can be found in China, and Ha Long bay in Vietnam seems almost like it's maritime cousin. The Dahongpao scenic area of Wuyishan in Fujian is pretty close to my perfect idea of a place to go walking. I still don't understand how on earth the rock formations at Zhangjiajie happened. In Cambodia I've paddled through a half submerged forest in a little boat which is one of the strangest feelings I've ever had before spending days cycling around the temples of Angkor completely in awe. Yet when I left Cambodia the biggest impression it had on me were the people, a truly amazing country. I have seen so many amazing things in the last two years although maybe I haven't done so many amazing things as I could, and that's something I'd like to change for the future.
