About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Swing dancing my way across Europe for a few months

ABOUT ME

I'm a typical idealistic sagittarius who just wants to learn everything, travel everywhere, see and do and know it all...and just wishes there was more time! Life for me is a strangely beautiful and complex mystery that astounds and often overwhelms me, and I’m constantly looking for new ways to unravel its secrets. Personal development is an important focus for me, since I feel we have to be brave enough to know ourselves in order to understand the whole, and to accept that we are simply a fragment of a much bigger mystery. So I’m always buzzing about some new crazy concept and finding new ways of expanding my mind and spirit...exploring consciousness, love, mysticism, non-ordinary states of existence....anything that brings me closer to that divine sense of joy and astonishment for everything life is. I find that in the creative process, deep human connections, beautiful natural surroundings, yoga, water, sleep, even on the dance floor. Life is profoundly fascinating and delicious and I love connecting with people who feel the same.

PHILOSOPHY

"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken" - Oscar Wilde

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Because I tend to travel alone, following my own very vague and ill-advised whims, and this is the best way to find my people! I want to believe that I can find people weird enough to be my kindred spirits in all corners of the world, and feel part of their world for a while. The artists, the lovers, the dreamers, the freaks. People who give long hugs, who laugh inappropriately, who follow their passions, who celebrate life. People who understand the importance of dancing alone in their rooms!

Having said that, I’m a horribly disorganised traveller and usually leave things impossibly late…so I haven’t couchsurfed quite as much as I’d like to have so far, as that requires more foresight than I’m usually capable of in my dishevelled hobo mode. I’m working on changing this though, as it’s always the people that make a trip special for me. People make the best memories, friendships are the most lasting souvenirs.

Interests

So many interests, so little time! Really though, anything and everything that takes me out of the ordinary...getting absorbed in music, travelling, all things metaphysical, exploring altered states, connecting with animals, truly appreciating nature.......I love playing guitar and mandolin, making art, meeting new people, vegan/vegetarian food, getting hysterical, crafternoons

Music, Movies, and Books

To hear: my musical tastes are pretty eclectic and I really love getting lost on Spotify, particularly discovering world music....but some old favourites are Beirut, Atahualpa Yupanqi, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Satie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Bon Iver, Leonard Cohen, Led Zeppelin, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, Chopin, David Bowie, Ella Fitzgerald....I really love folk and world music, blues, jazz, classical, all sorts really.

To read: one of my favourite books is called "The Way of Wonder" by Jack Haas.....also things like Alan Watts, Oscar Wilde, Pablo Neruda, Herman Hesse, Eckhart Tolle, Thomas Moore and the like......but I write more often than I read.

To watch: anything by Louis Theroux, David Lynch, David Attenborough, and brilliantly awkward comedies like Peep Show (the best!), Jam, Summer Heights High, Frisky Dingo, etc etc....and all sort of mindblowing documentaries that remind me how little I really know about this crazy illusion of reality I participate in

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The Gibbon Experience in Laos was ridiculously cool - zooming along huge ziplines through the jungle and sleeping in amazing treehuts at night.

Also going to my first Kiwiburn (NZ's regional Burning Man event) was life-changing.
