About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Working on getting old, so I can finally raise those goats and smoke my pipe

ABOUT ME

Well, I'm Kilian, a recent Irish immigrant to New York. Working, learning, having a fine time altogether. I'm also half German so travel and multiculturalism is in my blood.

What would my friends say about me? Probably that I can't say no to any invitation for fun and banter. I'm unstoppable when I'm on a roll and try to (and tend to succeed) at infecting others with my need for fun and excitement. I like letting strange new things happen to me and just go with the flow of the people I find around me, or bring them along to whatever I think will give us the best time. I'm always one for a story, listening or telling and I value nothing more than humans getting together in a good social environment (read bar or party with tasty beers etc.) and enjoying themselves.

PHILOSOPHY

I live life to enjoy it, which I also can do by facilitating others' enjoyment of it. I like to meet new people and hear what they have to say. Humans are connected more and more like a single organism these days and need to experience each other as much as possible. I like all experiences and feelings, good or bad, it's at least good for a story. I consider us all to be equal in principle.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've always meant to start up this couchsurfing thing. I used to travel a lot and recently got the itchy feet again. I won't be travelling for a while yet but I want to finally open my home to travellers, particularly given where I live being so great to travel to (but expensive to stay at). I hope I'll hear some good stories from my guests and get some ideas and contacts for places to go when I get on the road again.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I haven't done any couchsurfing through this website yet but I've naturally done it myself many places I've went. I have a knack for meeting nice, inviting people wherever I go and have stayed in some great places under all colours of circumstances, be it with long lost friends or complete strangers. Every experience is an inspiration in some form or other and I never forget it. As for hosting people: it's always a pleasure, whether we remain good friends afterwards or merely acquaintances, I'm grateful for each experience.

Interests

Every day in NYC is a new adventure. I like cycling, swimming, climbing and other such physical stuff. I spend a lot of time at parties and bars in the city too, just meeting people and having a good time. There's always plenty of cultural activities to find yourself at as well.

I'm always trying out new things and keeping an eye/ear open for what's going on around.

Music, Movies, and Books

Too many to mention. I never really read much of what people write here. We can talk about these things when we meet! Better to remain open-minded to new genres that people might be able to introduce you to - or let you see in a new light compared to how you viewed them before - than to decide what a person must be like based on their preferences.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Let's see, the Aurora Borealis in the Arctic circle in Northern Sweden in the middle of the freezing and sunless winter was pretty up there.

Another one was more of an extended experience than a moment. The first time I got a feel for true communication between people. That was when I spent a week and a half with an apartment full of people that were initially complete strangers and none of which could speak my language - and I barely theirs. It turned out to be amazing fun and we connected very much, so much so that I went back 2 years later to do the same again. I not only learned a lot of Mandarin in that time (I was in Chengdu) but about how to speak to people in any language that you're not good at.

Teach, Learn, Share

As you might guess from my job, I'm all about the teaching and the learning. Depending on your level of interest, I can go on and on about any of the stuff I've decided to learn for myself thus far. Most things are fascinating in their own way and if you think so too, we'll get along plenty well.
