About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Stay healthy, emotionally support my recently-launched young adult kids, travel, appreciate all the good stuff.

ABOUT ME

Most of all I love my kids, then playing basketball, travelling, learning languages, reading, and chocolate (maybe chocolate should be higher on the list). I'm very proud of my kids and feel lucky to have them. I travelled quite a bit when I was younger: in high school i was an exchange student in Holland, after college I played pro basketball in France and Germany. Now that the kids are off on their own and I have some disposable income, I can travel more again. I'd like to go places I'm curious about but never been to: Cuba, Vietnam, South America...

PHILOSOPHY

Be honest, be fair, try to make good choices, be kind.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Mostly I host these days. I haven't had that much time to travel. I like having the young adults (and older ones, too) come through and share a bit about their adventures. It's worth the temporary bit of chaos. I have, though, been a guest a several times: 2 days in Portland, 8 days in Wash DC., and more recently: 2 weeks in Paris, 1 week in Brittany, 1 day in Padua.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

In the 60s, 70s, 80s, my folks travelled a lot, and most often they met people along the way. Connections led to connections, and they almost always stayed in homes, not hotels, and made lifelong friends. Then I became a adult and travelled a lot, again, meeting people and mostly staying in homes. Now I'm passing this culture on to my teenagers: it's great to meet all kinds of people from all kinds of cultures. It's also great, now that I am not able to travel as much, to offer hospitality back and keep it going. Another benefit of hosting is that I kind of get to travel vicariously.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Played pro basketball in France and Germany (early 80's). In 2006 spent 3 months visiting friends and relatives in Germany, France and Italy--traveling by train, laptop in hand, working every day, just as I do at home! It was great. And recently, Spring 2010, I did the same thing but only six weeks. Very fun. (I'm not sure this is very amazing.)
OK, time to update this: me and my basketball team just won the gold medal at the 2011 National Senior Games, in the women's 55-59-yr-old division, in which there were 18 teams. I was happy and amazed!
2016 update: Still playing in Senior Basketball leagues and enjoying it. Going to New Zealand April 2017 for the World Games!
