One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Once 7 days bike riding accross spain.

Teach, Learn, Share

magic trick, cooking, drinking wine.
happiness and freedom (if only I could)

I can teach you how to write a Couch Request that works great on me and maybe on others Parisians host (lot of Parisian are experimenting request harassment). For sure it takes a little more time than copy pasting the same message to everyone. But it does not take more than 10 to 20 minutes. My status is usually : no-couch-surfing or coffe-or-drink because I became request-allergic, but I still host sometimes.

It is difficult to be hosted in paris, look at the wiki and Paris Tips. What you probably have already read : Writing a Request. Some Parisian hosts have 5 (I did) to 10 requests a day, so short request is great. Many people are writing too much about their travel plans and the reason why they are travelling. It pretty often looks like that : "I finished my University year of blabla field degree, now I am in holiday and during this summer/winter/spring break, I will be travelling all over europe: spain, germany, Italy, france... My budget is short so I love the idea of CS, beside I am new to it, and I am so happy to come to Paris and meet real Parisian people. Your profile look really really interesting..." All that does not make your request personal. Making it personal is in my point of view the best way to have an answer (maybe positive):

Be as simple and practical as you can (if special food like vegetarians or any allergy, ...). Request good timing is hard to guess. For me 20 to 5 days in advance is neither to far nor to short. Even if you have bought your ticket 4 months before coming, there is no point asking 2 months in advance for the couch. Example : Did you knew 2 months ago where will you be right now ?

For me a very good request is :
*1* about the host (What make you think he/she is the good host ? What have you got in common?)
*2* about you (What is your 1st plan in Paris?)
*3* practical and short : who, when, how many, how long ?
(in my case it is 2 persons max, 3 nights minimum, starting monday to thursday)

Extra Specials :
* Try to make the request special, the host should feel you read his profile.
* If you find informations in the profile that is special for you and the host, tell about it.
* If you find informations in the host's close friend's profiles, that is even better to tell about.

This is tips for long time surfer : some are artist at how to be-a-good-guest or even better : some masters the magic guest-tips with that staying full week or more, is no problem.

Hosting newbies does not make me vouch! If you can teach me... But I can not help, I am more the kind of person that host and travel, rather than the one going to every CS-meeting trying establish connections with big-Ambassadors and CS-heroes.

This section is dedicated to people that are booked on my couch :
# If your name appear on the couch booked list, that is great, it means I will certainly be waiting for you the evening of your arrival date.
# You should have printed my directions, with GoogleMaps link that indicates how to come to my place, with entry code. If you do not have it : ask for it, sometimes I forgot to send it.
# 2 or 3 days before coming I invite you to write me at my personal email address, remembering me that you are coming, with arrival time.
# if you are staying in France a week or more buying a mobile phone pre-paid card make every arrangement with your host easier : link an all the offers in my case it is free for me to phone french phone.
# If you want to stay longer/ come sooner, or with an extra-CSurfer, or if you want to come back, just ask I really often understand and accept. Surprising me in this hosting situations is not the best way to have a comfortable relation.
# There is no need of bringing present. If you really want to, food or beverage from your place is a good idea. If have no idea, bring bread, the traditionnal ones with cereals are my favorites.
# My fridge is usually quite empty. Well, I always have butter, jam, honey and tea : my typical breakfast. You will be invited to it every morning. The problem is bread is often missing...
# When you will be at my place, you will be quite independent day time. Evening could be : having a drink in cheap bars, concert place, wine and cheese at my place, free-food restaurant or free out-side cinema festival or improvisation theatre. If you expect to sleep early, maybe I am not the perfect host for you.
