About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I want to live forever feeling as good as I do right now.

ABOUT ME

Paul Davis retired from his body in 2012, leaving it under the administration of an invisible team of caretakers. The body lives in a motor home, traveling about the US with one small dog, absorbing sights, sounds and inspiration for its writing, still using the name "Paul Davis" for convenience. Having no other skills to practice, it continues to write and sing.

PHILOSOPHY

My most recent epiphany is that I don't exist. There is this body, but the whole thing about Paul Davis has been a fiction from the get-go. Now I'm trying to find out what this body can do when it's unleashed from the requirement to be a Paul Davis. Stay tuned.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have hosted, but so far I haven't been a guest. Some day, some day.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I crashed in a lot of people's houses when I was a hippie back in the '60s. That is, I think I did. It was all "really far out, man".

In the '80s, long past all the haze of my hippiedom, I joined a group that did much the same as this one. This was well before the Internet, and I can't recall exactly how the whole thing was organized. But I do recall that I had some very fun visitors show up in my condo in Anchorage once from LA, and it turned out later that they were sort of famous in a small way. Since I never watched TV and rarely went to movies, this was all lost on me, so I failed to be as impressed as I suppose I was expected to be.

Since joining CS I've hosted numerous people at the home I no longer have in Arizona. They were uniformly fun and interesting, and not being able to host like that any more is one of the few regrets I have about no longer living in one place. I have hosted people in my motor home, although it's not likely to happen often since the CS system has no way to deal with transient hosts like me.

Interests

Landscaping, kites, dogs, travel, astronomy, singing, snorkeling, crosswords, writing, sex, wine, aviation, electronics, chess, cribbage, rummy, casino. All in no particular order. In fact, you could put disorder in there as another one of my interests.

Music, Movies, and Books

Sara Bareilles. I'm overwhelmed by her music and poetry. Her musicianship, her stage presence, everything. I think she's probably a genius, and her talent is not well recognized outside the world of pop music, which her music completely transcends. Other musicians I'm in awe of : Henry Butler, Mary J. Blige, Nikhil Banerjee, Katherine Jenkins.

"American Beauty". I had almost forgotten about this movie, and I think I may not have gotten everything the first time I saw it. This is probably in the top tier of the best movies ever made.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was arrested (for marijuana possession) in 1973, and on the elevator going up to the King County jail, my escort pulled out his service revolver and pressed it against the back of my head, saying, "Don't move a muscle or I'll blow yer fuckin' brains out." I took this to mean he didn't like me, which surprised me since I was pretty sure I had never met him before.

Nevertheless, not wishing to indulge his perverse impulses, I did my best not to move any muscles. However, as you probably know, it's technically impossible not to move any muscles at all, so I can't be completely sure that my brains weren't, after all, sprayed all over the elevator walls according to my escort's fantasy.

"The thing is," I reflected later, "how would you really know?" We all have our ideas of what happens when you die, but none of us knows for sure. It's as possible and plausible as anything else that what happens is you just -- in some other-worldly way -- invent the continuation of your life, and to your other-worldly self it appears that everything is going on as before and your other-worldly body and its made-up world are indistinguishable from the original.

So, bear with me if I seem not to take life as seriously as you do. I could just be making this up!

Teach, Learn, Share

I went through being a libertarian. Now I'm an anarchist. The State must go if our species is to survive. To quote from the Randy Newman theme song in the TV series, "Monk", "... I could be wrong, but I don't think so!"

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Iceland, India, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, Norway, Puerto Rico, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, Virgin Islands, U.S.
