ABOUT ME

I like to think of myself as a pretty easy going guy really mellow and calm. I am along for the adventure that is out there if the "adventure" comes to me that is great but well if I am the cause of the "adventure" well watch out it is going to be even better! I would like to think I have a good sense of perspective on situations that I encounter "The Grand Scheme of Things". People say I have a pretty quirky sense of humor, sarcastic when it definitely is needed, attempts at high brow stuff on occasion and throw in a Mad Magazine and The Onion for good measure. I think with my personality one can always count on a good mal-appropriation or non-sequitur. Seriousness has its place but...

You have to be ready to laugh at yourself and the silly things you have done in your life. I will be the first one to do that about my life and what I have done. What can I say I love to laugh and if you can't laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at!

PHILOSOPHY

I think that we all have gaps (I like the french word Lacunae)in our knowledge. So what I see in my life is the opportunity to fill in those gaps. Are you going to be one of those people that helps me fill in the gaps?

I read this in "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky. It is not my personal philosophy but I think it is an interesting thought.
"Better be unhappy and know the truth, than be happy and live like a fool."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Been lucky to go out to local events and meet some very interesting people.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Signed up in June 07, I have not used the couchsurfing but have had the pleasure of meeting and hosting some extremely interesting people. I believe it gives a person another opportunity for adventure like no other.

On my travels in Poland '96 and '02, Hungary '02 and The Republic of Georgia 2001-2003, I have done the random, knock on doors looking and pantomiming my need for a place to sleep at night or taken up the random offer to sleep on someones floor. Couchsurfing before the formation of this.
"Good Traveler's Karma" Always Stay Positive!

Interests

Good conversation, interesting view points on life and most importantly the opportunity to share my opinions and ideas.

I firmly believe in the idea of giving back to the community you live in and volunteering time to good causes. My opinion is that if you have the time and opportunity, why not? I think it is important for people to take an active role in the communities that they are a part of no matter how small one might think that role might be. I have been lucky to volunteer with some great organizations (Habitat for Humanity, United Cerebral Palsey Foundation, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program IRS to name a few) and always looking for more opportunities. I enjoy cooking a lot but I have found that I enjoy eating even more.

Learning about the world and what makes people do what they do.

A Bushmills on the Rocks (or Tanqueray and Tonic) with old and new friends never hurt.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Cinema Paradisio, Red, Since Otar Left, City of God, Slum Dog Millionaire, Infernal Affairs(The Departed pales in comparison), The Raid: Redemption, A World Without Thieves, Detective Dee and the Phantom Flame, The Hangover, Sound of Music, The Bourne Trilogy, The Warriors, Attack the Block, Blade Runner, Aliens, Being John Malkovich, Black Hawk Down, High School of the Dead, The Fog of War (Who knew a documentary with Robert McNamara just sitting and talking could be so interesting)or Any Bruce Lee Movie.Television: Globetrekkers is my only scheduled show to watch. I have become a fan of the show Dual Survival, Castle, Person of Interest, The Wire, Entourage, Man vs. Food and Psych. Finally, one show that I think is absolutely amazing is Ninja Warrior (Sasuke) and 30 Rock. As an 80's kid Robotech(Got the Complete Series on DVD) and Transformers. Music: The Police (Greatest Band in the World), N.W.A., Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, Led Zepplin, Pink Martini, Olodum, The Jackson 5, KT Tunstall. I guess I have varied tastes. Anything that has some style to it and makes me want to hit the dance floor would do also.Magazines: The Economist, Christian Science Monitor, Slate, Foreign Policy, Reason. Not that they are magazines but the websites run by the Cato Institute, the Mises Institute, Real Clear Politics and TED, I really enjoy.Radio: Car Talk, This American Life, RadioLabBooks: The Little Prince, Les Miserables, Illiad, Uncle Toms Cabin, Roots, War and Peace, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Anna Karenina and Biographies about FDR or Stalin (Both fascinating characters that did so many things). Currently trying to read and have gotten half way through Passage to Power, Lyndon Johnson, but other things just come up so who knows when I will finish?

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Life is great and I believe good fortune has allowed me depth and breadth in experience and opportunities.

On a more tangible side, one thanksgiving day, when I was working as a wild land firefighter for the National Park Service I was sitting on a mountain top eating my processed turkey loaf, powdered mashed potatoes and soggy green beans looking out over a 5,000 acre wild land fire in the far distance. To see the colors and the beauty and understand the power of nature. I will never be able to describe what I have seen and still do it justice.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, South Korea, Turkey

Countries I’ve Lived In
