About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Embrace the past / Surrender to the Present / Create the Future

ABOUT ME

Sometimes I live at home in Kalamazoo, where I have a job, a house, a couch, and a community to try to work on. Then, sometimes I don’t have all that stuff, and I travel indefinitely for a while. Eventually the ways of the road get tiring and the gravity of my hometown draws me back, my mind full of stories to tell. I see stories everywhere I go and in everything I do. My goal is to write them. I have a great number of goals, but this one is the most encompassing: using stories to affect the world.

PHILOSOPHY

As a rambling philosophy geek, I can't allow myself the use of open pros to talk about philosophy in this small a space, so please enjoy these equations: everything/one is everything/one. zero = infinity. Everything is excellent; nothing is okay. Silence is defeat. everything is propaganda. This world is what you make it. Capitalism is organized crime. That everything dissolves in humor, is the divine comedy. Fine lines are for dull minds. Social elitism is wide-beam oppression (as opposed to specific genres of oppression like classism or homophobia in which the beam is focused in on a specific demographic). Nouns are verbs that got mixed up with the wrong crowd. Stagnation is illusion; reality is a flux. Inaction is complacency. Complacency is perpetuation.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I just got back from a trip in Europe, surfing, and hanging out with local couchsurfing groups. Now I'm home in Kalamazoo and looking forward to hosting people when they come, when the tourist industry in Kalamazoo revs up(any day now), or the when the 86 cool couchsurfers in this city all happen to be busy at the same time. Oh look: I wrote some kind of couchsurfing theory at the bottom of this profile. It might sound kind of dense and bombastic, but it's stuff I've been thinking about for ALL THE TIME, check it out!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Much couchsurfing in Europe and a little in the states. All good times to varying degrees.. On the hosting front, I've only hosted one person one night. It's not that I don't want to host people, but that the couchsurfing community in Kalamazoo is many times larger than the number of people who actually want to visit. Darn, I guess I'll have to move to another country with big mountains or something, like Peru, just to get people to populate my couch.

Music, Movies, and Books

Rock in roll in general is my bedrock. Specifically, punk rock sits in the center, with hardcore, ska, indie rock, hip hop, classical, folk, and many others gathered around it. Music is swell. I can't list specific bands cause that would be impossible. With movies I can be into pretty much every Genre. Out of all artistic mediums, i'm up for the most variety in film. I love Terry Gilliam, Alfonso Cuaron, Miyazaki, Danny Boyle. I can't list specific titles if i plan on getting any sleep tonight. I like Anime. Naruto, Evangeline,FLCL, Habaine Ramnai and manny more. With books: Herman Hesse, Niel Gaiman, Orwell, Lord of the Rings, Dune, Johnny Got His Gun, and so manny more I can't try to list. I love fantasy, sci fi, historical. Sometimes I feel like I could be happy for the rest of my life just reading. I like Manga, and graphic novels, I'm really into Allen Moore. Poetry: Cummings and Blake are my top two. I try to always be reading both fiction and non fiction. In non fiction Noam Chomsky, Allen W. Watts, Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, and Nietzsche, are some major influences on my thinking. I spread my self really thin with reading: between novels, short stories, comics, poetry, philosophy, politics, and my new thing - play scripts and screenplays - it gets to be a lot like channel surfing.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've spent over five years working with developmentally disabled and mentally ill people, and recommend that everyone reading this do the same.

The Swiss Alps weren't bad either.

Teach, Learn, Share

-I love sharing stories, telling stories, creating stories with people.
-I like to play on slacklines (the more elastic equivalent of a tightrope) and am always up for giving people a lesson.
-I rarely shy away from conversations concerning litterature, politics, philosophy and movies.
