About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My mission? Simple... to live Beyond. In anything and everything... live Beyond.

ABOUT ME

Me? Whoah... Okay, hate filling these out, for the record. First thing anyone notices about me... how tall I am. 6'5. I did play basketball. Even though I might be physically imposing, being a writer I was always more in my own head. I like to think I'm funny. If my jokes annoy you, just say so... You wouldn't be the first. I'm as outgoing as any introvert can be (spot the irony there!). I love my friends, and my family, and books... Yeah... Is that a good description? No idea.

PHILOSOPHY

My personal philosophy? Hmm... I don't really have one. Because life... if anything, it keeps changing, wavering, melding in on itself until the life you're living now is barely recognisable to the life you lived before. I had some tough times, and the one lesson I learned is not to take anything for granted. We have been given a precious gift, being allowed to roam this world, and I intend to squeeze all the joy I can out of it.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

The closest I came wasn't through this site. A Danish girl came to stay with my family for a year. She became like my sister in the end, and I like to think we rubbed off on each other. She taught me to think before I spoke (HA!) and I taught her to loosen up and just enjoy life. It was a real culture clash, but an eye opener as well. I learned that there are people in this world, so different from me and yet... able to offer me insights I couldn't find anywhere else. She's back in Denmark, and reports that she still carries a few South African traits (the tendency to play her music as loud as possible and just show up at people houses without an invite) and I'm very glad about that. Means we mattered to each other.

Interests

Books, books, books... Rock music... Almost any kind of movie... Swimming... Soccer... Writing, and... Oh yeah, did I mention books?

Music, Movies, and Books

Any book by David Gemmell, Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, Lee Child... hell, any book period! I have a nice collection of Famous five novels. Music? Pink, Fergie, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Casino, Green Day etc. Movies? Anything. My favourites are: A Walk to Remember, Rounders, A Knight's Tale, The Usual Suspects and... Good Will Hunting.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was 7 I told my parents I'm going to be a writer. To their credit, they've always supported me and, decades later, that's exactly what I am. I am, quite literally, living my dream.

Teach, Learn, Share

All I know is what I'm good at. When I was 7 years old I wrote my first story and told my parents I was going to be a writer. At the age of 7, I knew. So... anything remotely related to literature, I'm fluent at. Everything else, I'm just capable. But I'm always willing to learn, and hey... maybe you'll help me uncover some hidden talent I didn't know I possessed. There must be at least one, right?

What I Can Share with Hosts

A touch of authentic South Africa. There's an image of my country shared by the world - we had Nelson Mandela, but beyond that, it's a dangerous place. Nothing could be further from the truth, Its a beautiful, rich and diverse country, and I love sharing it with others.

Countries I’ve Visited

England, Germany, Mozambique, Thailand, United States, Zimbabwe
