ABOUT ME

By trade I'm a translator, by vocation an epistemology artist, and by occupation a dosser. I spend much of my time sitting at the computer telling myself I ought to be writing about philosophy, but in the meantime translating Kafka and Čapek will do. Computer games should be banned.

PHILOSOPHY

Pythagoras thought the world is made of numbers. Hobbes and Rutherford thought it was made of billiard balls. The modern fashion is to say it's made of pieces of string. In fact it's made of dandelions, which makes more sense and explains more than atoms or pieces of string. By developing our knowledge of dandelions, the substratum of the material world, we can learn better how to escape the prison of the demiurge.

Sergei Rachmaninov, the star of 'Brief Encounter', is hardly, if at all, mentioned in the credits, but his concerto was used in an effective and artistic way. Matyás Seiber's music, his own arrangement this time, is very effective in 'Animal Farm' too. Vaughan-Williams' music for 'Scott of the Antarctic' is awful.
There's a Norwegian (?) film called 'You, the living', and one of the characters in the film is a jazz band. The band, and its members, were not only characters in the film but its music was used to catalyse the comedy of the film in a very effective way.
