About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Get more involved with CouchSurfing by hosting new friends here in New York - I'm moving in September and will have more free space to host you soon.

ABOUT ME

Jack of all trades, master of none; I think way too much and over-analyze the little things. I love pushing my horizons but also exploring what I already know. I've lived in some pretty amazing places from all of which I carry a piece with me (through friends, experiences, languages and memories). I'm lighthearted and enjoy sharing and laughing with others.

What I love...

Foreign languages. The world is so full of expression and so many different ways to describe reality. To figure out how cultural consciousness is diffused through language to perfectly explain these realities is one of my greatest interests.

Cities, urban conurbations, melting pots and places of flux. I study Urban Planning so I can't help but think about and be obsessed with space... and how it is so much a manifestation of cultural identity.. for me unpacking and understanding the spaces we build is very much tied to understanding the languages we speak.

Writing, written expression, trying to make sense of the world through my thoughts and interpretations of reality. I've always found a wonderful outlet in writing, though up until recently I haven't been disciplined enough to consistently practice. Now though, it's become an important part of who I am.

Swimming, water, the ocean. I grew up near the beach and never realized until recently how much water, salt air and the outdoors has become an important part of who I am. The metaphors for life that we can draw from the world around us in this regard are incredible and the ocean in its seemingly infinite depth and constant flux is a wonderful place to start. For me, in life we all stand like seawalls... we try incessantly to hold back the waves of uncertainty, but in the end we can't control the tides of change.

...hmmm...there is so much more to say that this section is going to have to be a work in progress! I'll keep you posted!

PHILOSOPHY

Leap and the net will appear.

According to the Biennale in Venice...
Global Opportunism...meaning...
"WORKS on remaining a student as long as possible
LIVES wherever his studies take him
CELEBRATES freedom
BELIEVES one day he will settle down...Maybe"

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Right now, I'm hoping to start participating as a host. I'll be moving to a new and large apartment in Brooklyn in September and would love to be more involved in the community. I'm a great guide and very much enjoy showing off New York City - I studied urban planning as well, so you'll get a real feel for how it works, its culture, and even little inklings about architectural history when you hang with me.

I love meeting new and interesting people; this is a place that's full of them. If you're looking to have a nice chat, drink, and walk about for now, please let me know! I'd be happy to hear from you!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So far I've only been involved somewhat in the Milan Couch Surfing network and have met a number of surfers on a recent trip to Dublin... soon, hopefully, I'll have an opportunity to actually surf!

Interests

People, people watching, urban exploring, swimming, the beach, coffee, mass transit and train rides, airports, sitting in the sun, reading books about urban planning, drawing maps of fictional cities - I even include topography for all you map geeks out there, beautiful maps, New York City, LONG walks - I sometimes walk home from work near Bowling Green to Harlem, conversation - usually of the poliglot sort

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

arriving by train to Berlin while listening to Achtung Baby - I marveled at the city's industrial landscape; the mixture of past and present; the fact that it was the place where, up until recently, two super powers rubbed elbows; the youth and vitality.

hiking in the French Alps with 10 intrepid friends; we hiked from a small village called Treminis up into a high plateau where the French Resistance camped during World War II. It was quiet, peaceful, and though it was late April, there was still a foot of snow on the ground.

a helicopter ride around Manhattan; to see the city from the air is a truly remarkable experience. The way the skyscrapers cling to the island; the way the chaos and disorder appears to tranquil from above; the abundance of water - it was all breathtaking and unbelievable.

sitting on the shores of Lake Guatavita in Colombia; while in Bogota it was rainy and cool, Guatavita was warm and sunny - a terrestrial paradise completely removed from the craziness of life.

driving along Highway 1 in California, like above, passing from the cold cloudiness to beautiful, warm California sunshine. California is like no landscape I've ever seen before - rugged like Ireland, dry like Spain, abundant like Italy, it's new world beauty at its finest.
