About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Get to GDC

ABOUT ME

So, short story:

I'm an up and coming journalist covering the games industry. I had a place to stay for GDC, but it fell through at the last moment, and now I'm scrambling to get someplace to sleep--or at least to shower, if I sleep in my car.

Long story:

I'm just zis guy, you know? Originally from Detroit, I moved to Atlanta in 2009 then back to Detroit in 2011. I wish I could have stayed in Atlanta, but the financials just didn't work out at the time--I did meet a lot of great people there, though, who I still keep in touch with.

I just arrived in California earlier this month, and I'm looking to meet new, interesting people while also doing new, interesting things.

I try to spend my days learning. I've been teaching myself to program, and I'm always looking to be a better musician. Money's a bit tight, but that just means you get the chance to be a bit more creative.

PHILOSOPHY

All things must pass.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Right now I'm sorry to say I'm just looking for a place to stay. I'd love to host some cool people in the future, but my room mates nixed that idea when I brought it up.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

This is my first time!

Interests

Music! I play guitar, bass, and I sing. I used to play the tuba as well, but those are really expensive. I've always thought of myself as "bassist" but I guess I've been spending a lot of time on the guitar lately. It's just a lot more interesting to pay the guitar by oneself than it is to play the bass by oneself.

I also play rugby, which is a lot of fun for me because I get to legitimately tell people that I'm a "hooker." (It's a position in rugby.) It's an interesting challenge, because I'm not a particularly big guy--I try to make up for it by working harder than everybody else since I don't have the size to just run people over.

Obviously video games are a big part of my life. I moonlight as a games journalist--news, reviews, etc. It's an interesting way to keep your communication skills sharp, and it's actually a great way to meet some really excellent people.

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh man, where even to begin.

I like basically ALL genres of music. My interests run from Johnny Cash to Muse to Daft Punk. I've been really enjoying learning Decemberists and Mumford and Sons songs on my guitar lately.

My favorite hip hop is artist/group is probably Outkast (a daring choice, I know) but I've been really digging this guy Hopsin lately--he's got some really excellent flows.

I'd have to say my favorite movie ever is the 1930's version of "All Quiet on the Western Front." It's a classic, and for being so old, it's surprisingly harrowing. It captures that same dread and horror that we'd later associate with Saving Private Ryan--only this one did it in the 30s!

I'd have to go with the same choice in books. I've always really liked Erich Maria Remarque's writing. If I had a pick a second, it would be impossible. I've read so many books, and I've got so many left to read.

That said, I have a horrible weakness for pulpy urban fantasy. You know the kind-- modern day vampires and werewolves living in big cities starring the Spunky Female Protagonist who saves the day by kicking the Bad Guy in the balls. It's tripe, but I love it anyways.

More often than not, though, I end up reading non-fiction. "Literary" fiction just doesn't do much for me, while I've always enjoyed the way a good non-fiction writer can take something dull and make it into a thrilling book.

A more controversial statement: Janeway is my favorite captain in Star Trek. We can talk about this if you want a long conversation.

My favorite video game is probably Bastion. I'm super excited for the new game from Supergiant games that was just announced at PAX East. You don't even know.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Well, there's that one time I drove 3000 miles in three days. I guess it wouldn't be much of a "thing" for any kind of long-haul truckers, but for me in my tiny little car it was a big deal.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm really good at trivial, and I suppose I could teach you a bit of how to play the guitar if you don't know much. I also have a background in cell biology, so if you ever wanted to know how to clone bacteria I guess I can help out there, too.
