About Me

CURRENT MISSION

travelling Canada and the US, making new experiences, meeting interesting people

ABOUT ME

Being rather shy and quiet, I like listening much more than talking. Although I was living in Vancouver for a year and am travelling right now, I like to stick to my home actually. I´m a couch potato usually, which makes travelling a real challenge for me. In some things I am consistent with some typical prejudices about Germans, in others I am not. I am very detail oriented, clean and well organized, but I don´t like soccer, (too much) sausages and vacations on overcrowded Mallorca beaches.

PHILOSOPHY

I guess, my personal philosophies are subject to continuous change due to changes in my life and to the different situations I am facing respectively. Right now, first thing that popped into my mind was, try to find a balance between recognizing and respecting all the differences of all the things and people you encounter on the one side, without getting lost in it or cutting your own roots on the other side.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I registered only two months ago when I left Vancouver for my current trip and had exclusively positive experiences regarding my hosts eversince. I like couchsurfing not only to have a couch for the night but to get to know the people I am staying with a bit, to converse, share some thoughts and opinions, walk around, drink a coffee. And I always will be happy to help as far as I can with some household chores or in the garden.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I surfed couches in Victoria, Port Hardy, Calgary, Seattle, San Francisco, and Montreal and my hosts there made it a wonderful experience.

Interests

I potentially will be interested in almost everything you are going to tell me, I love to listen to people´s stories and catch a glimpse of their lives.

I like just going for walks, hiking, things that are related to my studies, which means social, historical and political issues (that is, talking about them, unfortunately I haven´t gotten involved much with it practically, but would be highly interested in doing so). I like animals and have a pretty good knowledge (at least in my opinion ;-)) about dog breeds and training. I am also very interested in computer stuff, cell phones and tablets and all the things you can do with it. Photography is another major interest of me, although I doubt sometimes that I am really good at it ;-).

Music, Movies, and Books

Again it depends, this time on my mood. The last movie that really impressed me and satisfied the part of me, that is longing for rather intellectual things was "Another Earth".
Talking about intellectual things, basically I like everything that expresses the ambiguity which is incorporated in every little detail of human existence. But I´m not always in the mood for such stuff, I watch movies mostly just for entertainment.

I love Science Fiction, whether it is the original book "I, Robot" by Isaac Asimov or the movie with Will Smith. I am secretly in love with Sigourney Weaver and love all of her "Alien" movies, also "Copykill", what would be a good example for Thrillers, which I also love, or "Death and the Maiden" as another example for dramas besides "Another Earth" if I am in the right mood (as Netflix revealed, I apparently like movies with a strong female lead) . I also watch comedies and do often feel like watching historical movies but am a bit confused by those tendencies, at least in my perception, to focus on and show all kinds of brutalities in every detail in those movies. What is wrong with these directors?

Regarding music I listen to everything that is not too extreme, that is, no death metal, no heavy techno, no hip hop with humiliating lyrics. I like classic rock and electronic music, e.g. Moby, Morcheeba, or Massive Attack. Although it is not extreme of course I don´t really listen to latin music, and rather little to classical music.

Basically, I do a lot of reading, but mostly things like newspapers, political and computer magazines. Also when it comes to books, it´s mostly social sciences or computer literature.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I guess, the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life is what I am currently doing, having lived for one year in Vancouver and travelling around now.

Teach, Learn, Share

Of course I could help you learning or practicing German. I am also good with computers.

And we can always chat about political, social, economic and historical issues. I wouldn´t call that teaching of course but rather sharing and hopefully we can both learn something.

Generally I still feel like I´ve got to learn a lot, I am constantly overwhelmed by all the things this world has to offer.
