ABOUT ME

I am the author of the novels Out of the Pocket, Openly Straight, and The Porcupine of Truth. All are young adult novels. Out of the Pocket won the Lambda Literary Award in 2009, and Openly Straight won the Sid Fleischman Award for Humor in 2014. I used to be a sports writer and editor (Associated Press, ESPN.com), so I love sports. I also love books, and movies, and laughing, and good conversation. I am extremely easy-going and generally laid back, kind to a fault, curious about others.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Couchsurfing plays a role in my novel The Porcupine of Truth! My characters couchsurf across the country, and I took the same trip and couchsurfed three times during it as well. I'd really love to do some more of it and meet some more neat people.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've stayed with three people, and all were good experiences. They were all during my Porcupine of Truth research tour in May of 2013. Ask me to tell you a story about this over a glass of wine. It was an insanely spiritual, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Music, Movies, and Books

Love all music, especially singer-songerwriters (Ben Folds, Aimee Mann, Rufus Wainwright). Currently obsessed with Haley Reinhart and Janelle Monae. Love to read all kinds of books, but focus mostly on fiction. Movies are great, but I tend to avoid the big Hollywood blockbusters.
