I was hiking alone in the German Alps (stupid me, I don't even speak German). I ended up on this poorly marked trail at 11 AM and it started to rise. I said I would stop for lunch when it stopped rising. Well it didn't stop rising until 3 PM. I am (perhaps was) deathly afraid of heights, so turning around was never an option so I just kept going up and up and up. The views of the mountains from high up were spectacular, but I also realized I was a walking infomerical for hiking safety, being by myself. After 4 hours of climbing up and up and up, I hear voices above me. I resist scampering to the top out of fear of falling right at the end and toppling all the way down the side of the mountain. I finally reach the lip of the trail and pull myself up onto a paved road. Standing there are old German couples with walking sticks staring at me sweating and panting, lying supine on the road. One woman came up to me and said something in German and when I didn't respond she asked in English "you came from?" and pointed to the trail I had climbed and I said 'Ya" and she laughed and walked away.
