About Me

ABOUT ME

Aloha, I had heard of this site/community/idea awhile ago, but hadn't ever thought of signing up and trying it.

A few things have led me here which has me thinking perhaps it was meant to be.

I made new friends in my town who were temporarily here with the WWOOFing program. Getting to know them more and hearing their stories was fascinating. I believe we all have something to share and learn from each other. Hanging out with the woofers and seeing how they lived together made me wish I had done something like that when I was younger. Sadly, I am older now, have a full time job, so I’m not at the liberty of being as "free". However, I do think participating in couch surfing can allow me to meet more amazing people and learn new things.

PHILOSOPHY

A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots- Marcus Garvey

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who had practiced one kick 10,000 times- Bruce Lee

Don't Gain The World & Lose Your Soul, Wisdom Is Better Than Silver Or Gold- Bob Marley

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I try and help others enjoy their experience here as much as I can. Even if I cannot host someone, I’m always interested in hanging out if possible, or just giving advice on things to do on the island. I want everyone to leave here having fallen in love with Hawaii. :)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Just a few, but they have been absolutely memorable and a ton of fun.

Unfortunately, my island does not have much of a couchsurfing environment (not a lot of people active), but I have been able to meet a few and hang out. It has been great times, and I have made some cool new friends.

Interests

Travel- I have traveled quite a bit, so have a few stories to tell. It’s always fun exchanging travel stories with others. I can sometimes offer a couch, but can always offer advice, information and recommendations.

Food- I love all food. The least picky person I know. Always willing to try anything at least once. The only way to have a new favorite, is to try it first.

Music- almost all music, but my heart belongs to REGGAE and old school hip-hop the most. I do listen to a lot of classic R&B, funk, rock, music from all over the world. I have a very very diverse playlist on my phone. Everything from Bob Marley to Cidade Negra- Nina Zilli
to Juan Luis Guerra. Led Zeppelin to Bad Brains, Eric B and Rakim to Prince. See, all over!

Football (fútbol/futbol/サッカー/soccer)- I am a diehard fan of the sport. This year I will be attending my third World Cup. This year is in Russia.

Culture- One of the biggest motivations for me to travel. Learning about other cultures and sharing my own. There is no price that can be put on learning and sharing culture. It truly is priceless.

Film-Love all sorts of film, another thing I am not very picky at. I can sit and watch just about anything, from Hollywood hits to independent films. While living in Utah, my favorite part of the year was during the Sundance Film Festival, which I attended nearly ten years straight.

Books- Another wide range. I love to read just about anything. At any time I can be reading a few books, which can range from The Life of Pi to the Tao of Pooh. I once started reading a western novel from Louis L'amour and didn't put it down until the whole series of 18
books was finished. I am a big fan of Paulo Coelho's Alchemist, and usually read it every few years. I love reading travel memoirs, and anything else travel related. Some recent ones I enjoyed were Turn Right at Machu Picchu, The Lost City of Z, and The Monkey Learned Nothing.
Not just a book fan, but I love magazines, newspapers, journals, anything I get my hands on.

Language- Ties closely to culture, this is the other thing that inspires me. I am fascinated with language, and hope to someday learn a handful. My birth language is English, and Hawai'i's pidgin. For people who have been here, they will understand it is definitely not the same. I studied Spanish for many years, as well as Japanese. Japanese is the language I speak at home, and English at work.
I can survive in Portuguese and am currently studying Russian, in order to communicate during this years World Cup!

Music, Movies, and Books

I have a wide range of taste when it comes to books and film. I am a huge fan of Independent film, and attended the Sundance Film Festival for almost 10 years in a row. So many amazing films shown there that do not end up being released widely.

I read just about everything from the Bhagavad Gita to Paulo Coelho. From non-fiction to Haruki Murakami. Pablo Neruda to Octavio Paz. I recently finished Turn Right at Machu Picchu, and am dying to get there.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The one question on this page that I have a hard time answering. Something as fun as volunteering at the 2002 Winter Olympics, and meeting so many people from all over the world, or a simple thing like sitting at the beach watching a whale give us a show. Too many experiences to wrap up into an answer here.
