About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Travel, climb, and adventure as much as possible before I have to pretend to be a normal, responsible adult.

ABOUT ME

I currently spend my summers working as a fishing boat captain in Alaska; which allows me to find new things to try/do for the rest of the year. I love being outside and staying active - I'm always excited for new adventures. I am about to embark on a 2 month trip around Europe (mid-Feb to mid-April 2014) and I want to make to make the most of it. I'm not real enthusiastic about big cites and crowds. I am more interested in the natural wonders of the world and I'd rather be outside in completely miserable weather than be cooped up inside.

PHILOSOPHY

Smart people learn from other peoples' mistakes, average people learn from their own mistakes, and dumb people never learn.

I always try to take advantage of every opportunity to do something new, even if I don't have much confidence that I'll enjoy it because you won't learn anything or make any memories by just sitting around inside your comfort zone.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have not yet hosted or surfed. I am about to start a 2 month adventure around Europe, where I would be really excited to do some surfing. I won't be able to host until September 2014 at the earliest (when I get don't working in Alaska this summer)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have never Couchsurfed before but I have done a fair amount of solo traveling (mainly around the US and New Zealand - hiking and rock climbing) and I really enjoy meeting new people. I find that people who love to travel are always very open and excited to share their experiences; knowing that you participated in making some one else's journey memorable just makes your own journey that much more of a positive experience.

Interests

Rock climbing, ice climbing, snowboarding and skiing, canoeing, hiking, surfing, scuba diving, traveling, fishing, hunting, reading, meeting new people and trying new things.

Music, Movies, and Books

I grew up in a household where music was almost completely absent, but in the past few years I've been discovering that I like almost all types of music. I'll watch pretty much any movie but I have to admit I don't own a singe movie. I love to read; mainly action/espionage and sci fi/fantasy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was in high school, I went on a 30 day and a 40 day canoe trips in northern Canada. The group I went with (Les Voyageurs, Inc.) makes the kids going do all the planning and preparation. We planned the route, dehydrated and packed our own food, trained in whitewater and whitewater rescue, and outfitted and repaired the canoes ourselves. On these trips I've capsized over a waterfall, got hypothermia, traveled where there are no trails and the maps aren't accurate, come face to face with arctic wolves and herds of migrating caribou, and stood by the grave sites of some of the first explorers to ever chart the area. I would say that those trips initiated my love of adventure, travel, and the outdoors more than any other experience in my life.

Teach, Learn, Share

There have been a number of people in my life that put in a lot of time and effort to teach me things that have become my favorite hobbies and I've always had an immense appreciation for that. I've always enjoyed being able to pay that forward because I want everyone to be able to get the same amount of joy from those activities as I do. Examples: rock climbing, canoeing, fishing, hunting, ice climbing, surfing, snowboarding, and skiing.
