A six month mission around Asia

ABOUT ME

I'm from Ireland, I live and work in London and am currently travelling all around Asia.

I'm a London based Graphic Designer who's currently taking six months out of a hectic lifestyle in London in order to see a bit more of the world. I've been traveling round SE Asia for the last five months and plan to spend my last month in China.

Despite being a bit of a workaholic when I'm in London, I'm pretty easy going and laid back personally and as a traveller. I'm passionate about what I do and have taken some of these passions on my travels, in particular photography.

I've been picking up some new skills along the way on my travels. The most recent ones being motorbiking (I biked for 5 weeks around Vietnam) and diving (I completed my open-water diving licence in Indonesia). I brought a GoPro camera with me so have lots of great pictures and footage of breathtaking mountain passes in Vietnam and amazing coral and sea life around Komodo nation park in Indonesia, one of the best dive sites in the world!

I'm quite a sociable person and have made many many friends on my travels. My Facebook feed is looking very global these days! When in London I work hard and play hard as there is always so much going on that I don't want to miss out on. Similarly when I've been traveling round cities, I feel like I need to go out exploring to get under the skin of a city and find out about the 'real' city, not just the version that is presented to tourists. As I am a creative person, I like to find out what each city has to offer creatively and culturally - creative / youth culture, street culture / fashion, music etc. This is one of the main reasons I like to couch surf, as the insider tips you get from a local are infinitely better than anything you will read in a travel book.

Music is also a big part of my life back home so I am keen to find out about the music scene in each city and country I visit.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm relatively new to couchsurfing, as I did not really do many long travel stints before this one, and generally stayed in hostels previously in order to meet other travellers and gather travel tips. Couchsurfing seems much more appropriate for China in general as I am traveling by myself and will hopefully get to meet more local people in this manner.

Centres d'intérêt

Whenever I roll into a new town or city, one of the first things I do is go and check out the local markets. I love the energy and general mayhem that ensues at a good market! And trying out the local market food / street food is what a city is all about for me.

I'm also a bit of a magpie (I collect things), so after checking out the local markets, I tend to just pound the streets for hours taking photos of shop signs, street objects, people etc. and buying random things that I would not find back at home. I tend not to buy tourist souvenirs..

Movies I have enjoyed recently have been; The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Gravity. Big into American TV series also. There are so many good ones at the moment. Breaking Bad is the best thing I have ever seen on TV. Really sad that it has now finished. Also love The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones etc. (this list could also go on forever..)
