About Me

I'm just trying to keep it interesting and fun.

Currently traveling with my younger (25 year old) brother.

I've lived in Alaska since I was 3 years old. I enjoy running a great deal, and I managed to parlay enjoyment into the relatively unknown sport of snowshoe racing while in high school, and then college. I've represented Alaska in the Arctic Winter Games (where I competed against athletes from Canada, Russia, and Greenland) and the US in the Ciaspolada, a 6000 person snowshoe race held annually in northern Italy.

I like the outdoors (running, hiking, skiing, camping), but enjoy spending time in cities, particularly while I'm traveling.

PHILOSOPHY

Whatever you do, you'd better be having fun doing it. If you're not, and it's not leading to some future enjoyment, there's something wrong.

"travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness." - Mark Twain

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like to meet new people and I've found couchsurfing to be far more enjoyable for traveling than staying in hotels/motels/hostels and never getting to know locals.

Music, Movies, and Books

I've been told I'm a philistine when it comes to music.
Movies I like are pretty scattered - for example, I love Shawn of the Dead, The Shawshank Redemption, Snatch, The Prestige, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc.
Books - too many to start, although I haven't been reading enough lately.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

For one of my jobs, we were dropped off at the beginning of the day atop a peak somewhere in SW Alaska, and we would then walk along the ridges, taking a soil sample every 100m or so. When we finished our line, the helicopter would pick us up, and drop us somewhere else. One day, I only descended halfway down the side of the mountain by the time we needed to go back to camp (on a ~ 45 degree slope), so the helicopter hovered nearby, I scurried over to it, and climbed off the mountainside and into the helicopter, which at that time had nothing in contact with the mountain itself.

Teach, Learn, Share

-I know how to bind mukluks to wooden snowshoes using lampwick
-I've never had a serious hangover
-I've been to 43 US states and 31 countries on 3 continents.
-As a traveler, I'm down to explore and experience whatever is around, and as a host I'm happy to show you the fun stuff Alaska has to offer.
-I'm always happy to get a beer.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I enjoy telling silly stories of things that have happened to me, and I will try to bring you a little taste of Alaska as a thank you gift.
