ABOUT ME

Update Feb 2023: Just moved to the DC area and still sorting out my things, but once I get settled would like to get back into hosting.

I'm originally from NY, went to college in Virginia, then joined the Army and have lived in Alabama, Germany, (3 times) Kansas, Honduras, South Korea, California, Washington DC, Bulgaria, and a deployment to Iraq.
I love to travel and got to explore a lot of Europe, Central America and Asia during my assignments abroad.

PHILOSOPHY

Everything happens for a reason, and everything ends up alright, no matter how it seems at the time. If I hadn't forgotten my ATM PIN at the Beijing airport, or gotten my face smashed in by an errant baseball, I wouldn't have met some great friends. So I don’t plan too far ahead and let things unfold as they will. Stressful for some, fun for me.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

The last couple places I've lived I've used CS to make new friends in my new homes. My first couple years I did a lot of surfing, but I've also hosted a lot when I lived in Seoul and California. It's great to meet people from all over, while traveling or having people visit me.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So far, all good! I've surfed in Atlanta, Tallahassee, DC, Montreal, Nashville, Orlando, Chicago, San Salvador, Guatemala, Thailand, Vietnam, Slovenia, Turkey, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uruguay, Israel, and Japan (among others) and I've met other CSers in Seattle, Savannah, Miami and Belize... I've hosted surfers from China, U.S., Germany, Russia, Somalia, Poland, France, Malaysia, Romania...

I've also had some "couchsurfing"experiences not through this site. My favorite: I met a guy in Oslo who let me crash on an extra mattress at someone else’s dorm room. I met a German guy who had met a Norwegian, and he let the German stay in his dorm room while he (the Norwegian) was out of town. I met the German, who introduced me to the other Norwegians sharing the apartment, and they let me stay too. I think traveling is all about fun stories and experiences like that.

Interests

Obviously I love to travel. I enjoy hiking, Scuba, learning about history. I love old movies and just about any sport. I like to play basketball, baseball and tennis (and team handball if i can find anyone else who knows how to play). I enjoy going to pub quiz and hosting game nights (Taboo, Cards against humanity, etc), and I usually win :-)

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Godfather, Casablanca, Singin in the Rain, City Lights, Star Wars. I love old movies, but also enjoy the new stuff.

Books: Catch-22, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, books about history. Trying to read more non-fiction, open to recommendations.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've hiked to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park and Machu Picchu in Peru, Hiked up Kilimanjaro, walked along the Great Wall of China, explored the ruins of Angkor Wat and kayaked in Halong Bay, biked around Paris and flown a Blackhawk over Baghdad, hitchhiked in Japan, Korea, Honduras and Transylvania, to Dracula's castle among other places. I've been to the Olympics in Torino and Beijing, seen the Moai on Easter Island, the Pyramids in Egypt, and hope to go everywhere else...

Teach, Learn, Share

I love telling stories about my travels and hearing the stories of others. I know how to fly a helicopter, but I don't think I could teach you very easily, unless you have a helicopter we can use. I speak some German and Russian, and am always looking for an opportunity to speak it with someone. Learning Hungarian now as I plan to move to Budapest.
