About Me

CURRENT MISSION

(Note: this is 4 years old... when I'll have time, I'll update it! )

Learn Deutsch!

ABOUT ME

I am a researcher. I am working on making programming more fun for developers. For those of you that are surprised, trust me when I say that programming is an art which can be as fun as painting! And as with painting: some people are painting walls in grey, and some express themselves in unique and memorable ways... I'm just saying...

For some reason, I seem to prefer taking the hardest path when given the choice. I guess you could say I like challenges. This year I promised myself that I will finish an olympic distance triathlon... I wonder what'll be the challenge after I'll finish it... On a sidenote, did you know that Haruki Murakami is a runner? He has that awesome book: What do I talk about when I talk about running. Read it if you have time and like endurance sports.

I once took a course on improv theatre in NY, and liked it so much that... I took another one. Then I returned back to Switzerland where I was living at the time, and organized an improv workshop for my friends. Those were aaawesomely fun times!

I believe that music is to be performed not watched (just like photography :). We can't all make a living out of music, but we can all make music part of our life. (A south african border guard lady once told me this while singing and checking my passport. We agreed :)

PHILOSOPHY

I would summarize my personal philosophy until now as: "Work hard. Play harder."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am up for meeting people that travel to where I live. When I travel to new places I enjoy attending the local couchsurfer meetings. For some reason most of the couchsurfers I've met already are pretty awesome people.

Music, Movies, and Books

These are a few favorite books that I will anytime recommend to anybody:
* Clavell - The Asian Saga (historical fiction rocks. random fact form the series: four centuries ago europeans thought baths were unhealthy, and would bath a few times a year while the japanese were bathing every day... imagine the first europeans in japan)
* Keyes - Flowers for Algernon (the best introduction to science fiction. I offer a money-back guarantee on this one if you can prove you have a mind and a soul and you didn't like it)
* Armstrong - A History of God (the book that I am reading now. it does an amazing job at summarizing the history of the way humanity understood God over the centuries)
* Vinge - A Deepness in the Sky
* Postman - Amusing ourselves to death (very actual, very, very)
* Saks - The man that mistook his wife for a hat (about how the human mind is fascinating)

When it comes to movies, my principle is simple: better black and white with a story than in 3D and without. I love: Blade Runner, La Vita e Bella, Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life, Black Cat White Cat, Il Buono Il Bruto e Il Cattivo, 2001 Space Oddisey, The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Seven Samurai, Snatch.

Shows: Rome, House, My Name is Earl, The Big Bang Theory (first season), Boston Legal, Sopranos. Currently: Breaking Bad

The soundtrack of my life is by: Keith Jarrett, Queen, Amon Tobin, Leonard Cohen, The Doors, Gogol Bordello, Giovanni Allevi, Herbie Hancock, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Nina Simone, The Grateful Dead, RHCP.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

splashing at night in the northen sea to see fluorescent plankton sparkle. then running back in the sauna to warm up.
