About Me

ABOUT ME

Friendly, liberal, love chatting, going for walks, bike rides, swimming in the sea, gardening, fixing bikes, and cooking. I love learning new languages, experiencing new cultures and am deeply motivated to try and live in an environmentally sustainable way. I find a way to get on with most people, and I love trying most activities, except maybe competitive sports...

PHILOSOPHY

Ghandhi says it best: 'Be the change you want to see'

And, remembering that we're all just trying our best.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have surfed many, many couches through this website when hitching my way around the world. I have also hosted a few people when I've had a home and bed to offer. I love it, i think it makes the world a better place, and us happier people - the trust we build when putting faith in strangers' kindness is incredible.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Did a similar thing to Couchsurfers, called Servas, my family were hosts during all of my childhood. Then I stayed with lots of hosts in Reunion and Mauritius in 2002/2003. I loved it, it was an amazing way to jump straight in to experiencing every day life in a new country, meet open friendly people, and, as a lone traveller, feel safe doing so. In 2008/2009 i joined couchsurfers, and surfed many couches throughout the Canary Islands and the Caribbean. Again, it was fantastic, a constant stream of friendly faces to meet, welcoming hugs, fascinating lives, ready-made friends wherever i went. I particularly love how different the hosts are - you absolutely cannot stereotype a couchsurfer host, there is just one thing that unites them - open friendliness.

Interests

Main interests are environment, ecology, sustainable living, education, social issues, politics, languages and culture. Things i like doing: cycling, walking, dancing (to ANY music ANYwhere), singing, chatting, lying under trees, jumping in rivers, picnicking on the beach, swimming in the sea, growing food, interesting films, facilitating/teaching, speaking French, cooking with friends, eating, afternoon snoozes, picking wild food and going to the pub with friends. And sailing.

Music, Movies, and Books

Films i love - off the top of my head... Amelie, Delicatessen, I Love Huckabees, A Life Less Ordinary, The Life of Brian, that Mongolian one with the Crying camel, Dancer in the Dark, and most independent non-English films i've seen! And from childhood - Labayrinth and Mary Poppins. Music - most, but less so current anglo-American pop (i'm so bored), and particularly (i like) funky stuff to dance to, sea shanties to sing along to, jazz to listen to, Gypsy punk (just one band i know and love - Gadjo), Indie to remind me of my teenage years, reggae to take me back to the Caribbean (not stereotyping - it really was played everywhere), Tori Amos and... Bjork, no category, she is just amazing and i love her music/art in all sorts of situations.. Books, fiction that takes me to another culture/world, last few books I read and loved - The Red Tent , The Fifth Sacred Thing, Station Eleven, Wolf Winter, Cargo Fever, Purple Hibiscus... All set in other countries and other times, other worlds - I Iike to travel through reading books!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once hitched on sail boats across the Atlantic, around the Caribbean, to Bermuda and back, to visit my family without flying, and for the adventure. And here I am doing it again, I'm half way round, in Bermuda...

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm pretty chatty and love to listen to others life stories... I can fix bikes, share food growing skills, I know hundreds of short songs from around the world which I'll happily share... I'm a goodish, experimental and happy cook, will cook anything (except animals and their products, I'm vegan...) and I can show you a magic trick with an elastic band.
