About Me

CURRENT MISSION

... us & the great outdoors, we are one - love yourself, love nature ...
... at home at the moment, planning trips ...

ABOUT ME

I am coming from a little village called Rohrmoos in Austria, which is lying inmidst a big ski resort, work in tourism and am fluent in German and English, and learning Spanish and Italian.

I like doing sports quite a lot: as I am coming from a mountain and ski resort, skiing and hiking are probably my favourite, though in summer I also like to mountain bike, run or swim ... I also like going to concerts as I'm quite into music and my friends (https://www.facebook.com/TheGrandGreenOfficial, https://www.facebook.com/der-Wolf-und-der-Wind-313775908675433/, https://www.facebook.com/awalkinapark) do have bands of their own ... I mostly listen to rock music, blues, indie rock, independent labels, and local self-produced music.

some info about the region I'm coming from you can find here: http://www.schladming-dachstein.at

PHILOSOPHY

I take what comes next & leave the difficult stuff for GOD - and it works :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I try to give every kind of advice on locations I've been before and I feel familiar with. I also spread the word about CS everywhere I get :) I have an apartment with an extra room for guests, where I receive CSers to give back to the community from which I have received so much.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have surfed several couches now via CS.com and it always has been a great experience - meeting also the friends of the hosts in their city! I also surfed several couches off CS.com at friends and family in Austria (Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Gaschurn, ...), Switzerland (St. Moritz, Zermatt), Canada (Calgary, Montréal), the US (Walnut Creek, L.A., Winter Park), Denmark (Copenhagen), Norway (Bergen, Hardangervidda, Lillehammer), Sweden (Gotland, Jävle, Stockholm), Ireland (Wexford, Sligo) and Spain (Valencia, Galicia, La Vera), which was always great fun and a great experience. For some time I used to share this profile with my friend Astrid.

The reason for not having any host experience on the site so far is that all people I've hosted have become friends thru earlier CS experience and have contacted us off-site. I was able to host friends from Argentina, Austria, Canada, Germany and the US.

Also, I have written my Master thesis on the relationship between hosts and surfers and the effects it has on learning about a destination :) :)

Interests

skiing, hiking, music, running, mountain biking and swimming. Also, I like photography a lot, so the camera is always with me - check out my instagram (https://www.instagram.com/gerhard.der.pilz/) and flickr (https://www.flickr.com/gergi084/) if you like :)

I also like going to music festivals, but rather small ones, where you feel like being part of a family ... travelling of course is also something I love to do - best done by road trip :)
on my trips I always try to get local food, especially that kind made of regional products, but good Italian PIZZA is always welcome :) :) :) :) :)

Music, Movies, and Books

I could name lots of great movies, some of my favourite actors include: Kevin Spacey, Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Gabriel Byrne, Vinnie Jones, Edward Norton, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Di Caprio, Ryan Gosling, Mathias Schweighöfer ... I think "the usual suspects" is probably one of the best movies ever ... together with "into the wild". My music taste is everything around rock: hard rock, blues, skate rock, metal, indie, grunge, stoner rock, but also a little bit of reggae, trip-hop, hip-hop, techno, electronic and classical music like Strauss and Mozart. My favourite book overall is the Holy Bible - a good advice in any circumstance; I also admire Paolo Coelho for his writings; others I like are: The Medicus, Illuminati, Sound Of The Wind, The Angel's Game, The Pillars of the Earth, The White Wolf, ...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

that's a tough thing to say and it's hard to pick something - there's just too many things that are amazing ... EVERY DAY ... standing on top of a mountain is something pretty amazing in general. one thing's for sure - and that goes with the last words of Christopher McCandless - happiness is only true when shared. so many things I've done definitely are those shared with other people :)
* road trip through Ireland and Northern Ireland
* road trip from Austria to Tuscany in Italy and back
* trip with friends to Croatia
* cooking together and sharing time together
* road trip through Chile
* 3-months road trip through Canada and the US (twice)

Teach, Learn, Share
