About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To leave the bad thoughts behind (or to make fun of them)

ABOUT ME

Among many other goals in life, I feel like I need to travel the most I can, discover other cultures and breathe fresh air ! (cliché as it may sound)

What I enjoy the most is hiking in wild and remote areas. Could be on my own or with other nature-lovers. I wouldn't consider myself as a party animal, but Belgian beers are awesome and I couldn't live without a Mort Subite or Blanche every second day !

I enjoy strolling around in big cities (malls, record/book stores and food courts/markets are like churches to me) or at the beach, even though it generally bores me rather quickly (unless I've got my frisbee or a great novel)

I can be very talkative if I feel that the person in front of me also wants to communicate, otherwise I don't mind if we keep quiet, after all there are so many other ways to appreciate others' company ...

PHILOSOPHY

I don't want to feel bored, as it would be an insult to those, family and friends, who helped me growing up but passed away since.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hosting, surfing, giving advice on the forums, telling fellow travellers about CS, etc.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first crashed on a few couches, not always through CS and never for more than 2 days (Moscow, Prague and Australia) then went back home and changed my status to let everyone know about my place and attempts to become a great host ! My roommates and I had some great moments hosting before we had to move due to the owner getting back in the house ...

Soon after we moved to Brussels, I decided to quit my job and fly to Canada, with the idea of looking for a job over there and experiment the other side of couchsurfing : being hosted !

Man, was it fantastic ! I stayed with retired couples, flatmates, young men or women living alone, with time to show me around or not, I went to see glaciers (even crawled underneath), hiked and cooked a lot ... I had a better relationship with those "strangers" than with some of my so-called friends (or family members).

So I hosted Benoit (France), Belinda (Australia), Bernard (Belgium), Globestoppeuse (Canada), Andrew (New-Zealand), Adrian (France), Nérine & Nat (Belgium) + 10 or more CS from my former flatmate :) AND I was hosted by many people too (just have a look at the comments below, that'll be easier)

Interests

- Music (attending gigs and playing the bass guitar)
- Tennis (the same : watching and playing !)
- Cooking (mainly Indian and Italian food, or my own. I'm not particulary afraid to experiment a bit :)
- Cycling
- Hugging my friends, which is not very usual in Northern Europe unfortunately (we kiss one another on the cheeks instead, guys included !)

Music, Movies, and Books

- My all-time favourite book is probably Fahreneit 451 by Ray Bradbury, but John Fante, Haruki Murakami, Charles Bukoswki, Jacques Sternberg, Yoko Ogawa, Howard Buten, Chuck Pahlaniuk and many others are not to be forgotten. I also enjoy lots of graphic novels and comics (mostly European ones such as Blueberry), anything by Craig Thompson, Alan Moore, Lucy Knisley, Gabrielle Bell, François Schuitens and of course Calvin and Hobbes ! How to resist these two ?!

- Music : The Cure, Sonic Youth, Alvvays, Amber Arcades, Braids, Surfer Blood, The Triffids, Julia Holter, Soko, Keren Ann, Shoegazer bands, emotional music in general, indie, alternative, rock, eighties ... sometimes jazz (especially live, and I can listen to the 'Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown' lp anyday, it is so pure. Anything by Max Roach too), electro (Tipper is the best DJ ever), metal (Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies etc)

- Movies ... I am a big fan of Alan Parker and Atom Egoyan, I like science fiction and horror movies (even - or especially - the silliest ones), almost anything by the Coen Brothers. My two favourite movies are probably Gattaca and The Sweet Hereafter (and Terminator 2 !)

I'm not that much into sitcoms, but expect me to roar with laughters if Basil Fawlty or Flight of the Conchords are around ... Akta Manniskor, Bron, Misfits, and Forbrydelsen are amazing too.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Perhaps my most amazing achievement so far is that I'm still alive, but everyone here probably feel the same :)

I also had a ride along the Gibb River Road (Kimberley, Western Australia) on my bicycle, such a corrugated and sandy track (which stretches on about 660 kilometers!) that made it unforgettable (not to mention the sunsets, crocodiles and weird encounters) Great challenge, and lots of fun with the friends who were crazy enough to join me on that adventure.

Teach, Learn, Share

I used to teach French to a few Aussies while I was in Melbourne, which is something I had never tried before and that I enjoyed a lot !

I can sing and play the bass guitar, but it's not sure that I could teach that sort of stuffs, as my musical theory is pretty basic ...
