About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To explore more of the BC coast and mountains

ABOUT ME

Although on paper I am an engineer, I would much rather describe myself as an explorer. I love adventures, and use all of my means to engage in as many of them as I can. I am an avid surfer, sailor, and skier, and have always dreamed of linking any combination of them into a grand adventure. Two other great passions of mine are cooking and enjoying excellent cuisine with others. Finally, although not very accomplished, I really enjoy playing music and can struggle along on the guitar, mandolin, and cello.

PHILOSOPHY

bad moments are acceptable, but a bad day isn't (except perhaps in very extenuating circumstances).

When learning anything, I try not to be afraid of being awful at it. If I'm not failing (often the same as falling), then I'm probably not pushing myself.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am a hoster in vancouver and hostee everywhere else. as in all things, giving and taking are equally important and equally pleasurable. i started couchsurfing informally, having promised lifetime "that guy" status to a friend for such extended use of his fireside couch in whistler. see below.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

THAT GUY STATUS

"hey man, who is that guy on your couch over there? and why is he always on it?"

"oh, that guy? don't worry about that guy."

I have had the great pleasure of hosting and being hosted by a number of excellent people all around the world, several of whom have become great friends of mine.

"ok."

Interests

skiing, sailing, sparring, spearing, swearing, sweating, surfing, slurping, slurring, staggering, sleeping, scuba diving. eating, reading, making music, listening to music, adventuring. playing monopoly, chess, tic-tac-toe, scrabble, and that game where you act stuff out. dancing, walking, running, jumping, tennis, ping-pong, and panda bears. and sharks, puppies, wallabies, cheetahs, and big ass bears.

Music, Movies, and Books

music: otis redding, van the man, the band, james brown, the avett brothers, nick drake, the allman brothers, old crow medicine show. mostly everything else too, but this is what my ipod might tell me.

movies: point break, waterworld, butch cassidy and the sundance kid, slumdog millionare, 3:10 to yuma, into the wild...

books: skinny legs and all by tom robbins, the master and commander series by patrick o brien, hawaii by james michener

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I swam alone off the beach with a large horde of humpback whales and their calves in breaking surf in todos santos, mexico. That was pretty amazing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to apply physics to the art of building boats! I could give you a skiing lesson. I hope that by psychological osmosis I could teach something about optimism and leading a happy life. I enjoy nothing more than learning something new. especially new styles of cooking (new for me)
