About Me

A friend once described me as disarming. I'd say friendly, compassionate... I try to understand where other people are coming from. I practice meditation in an informal way. I'm vegan at home, and so far that's worked out when traveling as well. Still figuring out what else to put here, but I think you can get a pretty good idea of what I'm like from the rest of my profile, or better yet we can meet in person.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: The Princess Bride, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight...

Those are some old friends, but I like lots of stuff. I especially like character-driven films that let you live someone else's life for a while. Things like Oslo, August 31st and 35 Shots of Rum...

Music: The Beatles, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine...

I want to live in the first two Iron & Wine albums.

Books: My favorite work of literature is Hamlet. Here's a passage that might resonate with CouchSurfers:

Haply the seas and countries different
With variable objects shall expel
This something-settled matter in his heart
Whereon his brains still beating puts him thus
From fashion of himself.

A more modern favorite (but then, Hamlet is totally modern) is the novel Independence Day by Richard Ford. I've never read anything that felt more true to everyday life.

TV: I don't watch much TV, but I'm a big fan of Deadwood and Mad Men, and I grew up on Fawlty Towers.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Living in Madrid for four years. Was always a thrill to step out of the door and get swept up in street life.

A round-the-world trip where I tried to go slow. Two highlights were volunteering at an elephant refuge in Thailand and bicycling around the temples of Angkor in Cambodia.

And officiating the wedding of two close friends.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, Cambodia, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In

Spain, United States, Viet Nam
