ABOUT ME

i'm from tucson, arizona. i lived in germany for two non-contiguous years. i have spent a lot of time in sonora, mexico. i moved to buffalo, new york to go to graduate school. i studied linguistics there. i finished my PhD and am now teaching at a university in mexico city.

Music, Movies, and Books

i am not a big fan of saying something is a favorite because that notion is fleeting... but i really like:
music -- the helio sequence, mark eitzel, ryan adams, whiskeytown, the modern lovers, sufjan stevens, bonnie 'prince' billy, kathleen edwards, calexico... and so on.
movies -- breaking the waves, stuff by ingmar bergman, annie hall, in the bedroom, little children, french new wave, hal hartley... and so on.
books -- max frisch, denis johnson, thomas hardy, and then we came to an end, jon anderson, jonathan franzen, cormac mccarthy... and so on.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

this is a bit of a hodge-podge:

i moved to germany for a year without knowing any german. i learned so much in addition to the language.

i have spent quite a bit of time since 2004 living in a very isolated part of northwestern mexico. i essentially camp/live roughly while i'm there, which is fine by me. the village and its surroundings comprise one of the most beautiful places i've ever seen. i love the desert... especially when it's located on the sea!!! some of my stories from living there have led to my friends calling me the rattlesnake hunter... a nickname i am not fond of.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands

Countries I’ve Lived In

Germany, Mexico
