ABOUT ME
Marcelo Carrera - São Paulo – Photographer – EAV - Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (Parque Lage Visual Arts School) and Graduate in Business Administration - USP (São Paulo University)

The deepening of my research and work took place at EAV – The School of Visual Arts Parque Lage – Rio de Janeiro, at the Ateliê da Imagem – Rio de Janeiro, and in courses and independent workshops with: Charles Watson, João Castilho, Caio Reisewitz, Franz Manata, Daniela Labra, Marco Antonio Portela, Walter Firmo, Claudia Tavares, Pedro França, Renan Cepeda, Thiago Barros, Luiza Baldan, Marcelo Campos, Denise Cathilina, Eder Chiodetto, Marcos Bonisson, Gui Mohallem, Cristina de Middel, Cláudio Edinger, Martin Parr, Pedro David, Cia de Foto, Mary Ellen Mark and Alfredo de Stefano.

I did an artist residency in 2012 with the photographer Eustáquio Neves, in his studio and laboratory in Diamantina, Minas Gerais.

Research:

Meninas da Vila – 2010, in partnership with Pedro Farina depicting the largest brothel in Latin America, the Vila Mimosa in Rio de Janeiro. This work received praise from artists like Marcos Bonisson, João Castilho and Caio Reisewitz. In addition, it was chosen by Patricia Gouvea (Ateliê da Imagem) to take part in the presentation "Um Olhar sobre a fotografia Carioca” (“A look at Carioca photography"). I created the ‘Coletivo Totem Art’ (Totem Art Collective) which debuted with the theme ‘Limit’ at Foto Rio 2011, curated by Milton Guran. We did exhibitions in several cultural centers such as: The Centro Cultural dos Correios, Centro Cultural Laurinda Santos Lobo, Centro Cultural Hélio Oiticica, and Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal, all in Rio de Janeiro. The second theme of the collective was Silence, curated by Claudia Tavares, and it was shown at the Ateliê da Imagem and in the Estação Botafogo Cinema.

I participated in a portfolio reading at the ‘Festival da Luz’, in Argentina in 2010 and 2012, and in the International Festival of Photography in Arles, France, 2013.

I am currently developing the PandoraPix project that will be a platform for selling authoral photography, numbered and with a certificate, and a printing studio where we will unite the full Carioca photography scene in order to strengthen and highlight the richness of this local work.

With photography I compose my worldview and my interpretation of poetic imagery. I use analog photographic techniques, medium and large format, which enable errors, and then I incorporate these surprises in my images as unconscious messages.
