COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My most memorable CS experience (and I have had way too many to write about) was at a family farm in Costa Rica. Several days before I was supposed to fly back to the States I decided to meet up with a CSer in a small town several hours away. When I told my native Costa Rican friend I was going to visit this town she was baffled, "Why!? There is nothing to do there. No one to see. You will waste your time..." Despite her advice, I packed my day bag and left.

The trip was long and sweaty and when I got off the final bus my host was there to greet me. He had the most beautiful and contagious smile and a calm and peaceful auora. He told me I was his first host ever and he was curios as to why I wanted to see that part of Costa Rica- a town several hours from the beach with no clubs, bars, or tourist destination. He brought me back to this family's house which was also a mango farm, bull ranch and small motel. His entire family lived on that street, as they had been doing so for many generations, including his grandmother who was the most vibrant 80 year old woman I have ever met.

I ended up staying several days with his family. He did not go out of his way to show me the "cool" things in his town, instead he just went along with life as he normally would and invited right along side him. I became apart of his family. I ate every meal with them, helped on the farm, and even gave his father an English lesson.

My most memorable experience was walking around his land eating fruit from the trees. I was amazed, even shocked at how wonderful this was. Eating mangos and star fruit and fruit I did not even know existed straight from the tree! I was in bliss. And not to mention my host thought it was the most hysterical thing he had ever seen! Laughing at my pure excitement over something he sees everyday. It was very hard for me to leave my new family and I did so very hesitantly. I could tell they wanted me to stay and my hosts mother even offered me a job at her family's motel. I will never forget my time there.

A week later I landed in Brooklyn, New York full of excitement for the big city and new opportunity. It was time for me to start my "life" and get a real job. As I walked to my interview I stopped into a supermarket to grab a bite to eat. I noticed immediately the elegantly arrangement of star fruit on the fruit counter. They were wrapped artistically in green and brown plastic and cost 2 dollars apiece. I grabbed one sat down to eat it along with the other busy New Yorkers eating their lunch. As I ate it I became overwhelmed with sadness and a longing to return to his farm where life was lived with awareness and compassion for others.

CS can bring you to many magical places and show you a life you never thought possible. It will change your life and all those that you meet on your journey. As long as you keep an open mind and a compassionate curiosity for others, you can go anywhere and always have friends.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Bandaged the foot of a Mexican man at the border who was trying to get across for the third time in a row. His foot was diseased and rotting because he could not afford shoes and had been walking in the desert for 2 weeks straight.

Bartended in full-body paint as a tiger in Key West during their Fantasy Fest.

Auctioned myself of as a dinner bride in Seal, Alabama to raise money for the DooNanny- a amazing FolkArt Festival

Biked 100 miles in one day in Nova Scotia, Canada (When I was 15! haha)

Worked as a Professional Tantrica and Model for an Artist in Asheville, NC

Belly danced in the RunAway circus

Fallen in love. Fallen out of love.

CouchSurfed my way around the United States!

Lived in a cave with Bedouins in Jordan for a week. Really, I did :)

Partied in Berlin for 3 days straight (without knowing it)

Got attacked by a squirrel in front of the White House.

Was escorted by a Police officer in Alabama to Walmart to get a new tire going 120mph, texting, and blasting Rob Zombie.

Traveled to Portugal by myself to go to a Music Festival and ended up at a commune run by German polyamorists.
