About Me

I'm on my way around America with my mountain bike, and a mattress shoved in the trunk of my car. If you can host me, fantastic, but I would also really like to find people to ride and hike with, and practice my social skills after spending a few days in the woods. If you can't host me, I'm 100% fine doing my thing at Hotel Volkswagen.

I've changed jobs/industries almost annually. Worked in a jail for kids, cooked, wrote about fruits and vegetables for a magazine, worked in an emergency department as an EMT, and a bunch of other hodgepodge stuff.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

It started with a buddy's recommendation before one of my first cross-country road trips. Now a lot of the best friends I've made after college can be traced back to CouchSurfing in some way: people who hosted me, stayed with me, or were friends with people I stayed with. I've been to their weddings, watched their kids grow up, met up with them for far flung trips: it's awesome.

For me it's way less of a free AirBNB and more the original concept of mutual exchange: you share your culture and ideas with me, and I'll give you the best experience I know how wherever I'm living.

Interests

Really anything outdoors, but lately I have mostly been hiking, indoor bouldering and running . I just moved back to Vermont in winter 2016, and there are a ton of great hikes within an hour or so, and even more in the Adirondacks, which I prefer as a New Yorker.

Also getting into woodworking and learning about cars. All about the hands on stuff.

Music, Movies, and Books

Broom of the System by David Foster Wallace
Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann
Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham

I've blown chunks at reading books in the past couple years, and I think I've had that same list of books as my favorite for like 4 years: most of my recent reading has been technical.

TV I'm into Walking Dead, Orphan Black (she's such a babe and there's like 6 of her), and Homeland. I just watched my first episode of Game of Thrones. It's really a sustainable balance of nudity and sword death: I need to get caught up.

Movie preferences are mostly more of the same: there's definitely time for cerebral meaning of the world stuff but those are few and far between. Otherwise generally satisfied with mindless violence, predictable hero narratives (Tom Cruise always wins in space), hot girls, car chases, wealth porn: probably pretty typical American dude preferences.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Worked as a cook in a jail for kids for almost a year. I've stayed in touch with a few of the good ones and it has been really cool to see them grow. The kid who asked for Gone With The Wind from the library and read it in 5 weeks just finished college.

Teach, Learn, Share

If you care about it, I want to hear about it.

After being surrounded by ski bums and trekking through mountains for most of my life, I still haven't been skiing but would like to learn.

If you can practice some basic Spanish with me that would be great. I only know very rudimentary farmworker Spanish. The most substantial sentence I know is "Maybe if you let me put you on television, you wouldn't have to pay for sex anymore."

What I Can Share with Hosts

I will fix your broken stuff, cook some night, or take a family portrait for you.
