ABOUT ME

I love exploring and learning new things. I know enough to appreciate how little I know. In travel and in life I like to have a general plan, but I'll happily go with the flow of whatever may come instead; spontaneous adventures are often the most worthwhile. I often remind myself of Voltaire's observation that "doubt may be an uncomfortable condition, but certainty is a ridiculous one."

I make it a point to appreciate the little things (i.e. afternoon light on a leaf, the burst of flavor on my tongue biting into a ripe nectarine) and enjoy life as fully as I can. I know that life inevitably brings pain and disappointment, but joy is a choice always worth making; I've heard the secret of it described as "Unrestricted willingness to cooperate with the unavoidable." That makes a lot of sense to me, but unfortunately I don't know who said it.

A friend who is a pessimist once told me that someday I'll finally realize that he is right and the world really does suck, and he's concerned about how disappointed I'll be when that day comes. "You could be right," I replied, "but at least I'll have a great time until then!"

PHILOSOPHY

I believe in facing my fears and challenging my perceived limitations, and in so doing often discover I'm capable of much more than I had dreamed. I like to believe I'm helping to make a positive difference in the world.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've only had a few Couchsurfing experiences so far, but both hosting and surfing have been wonderful and resulted in new friends; people I'd love to see more often if only we lived closer.

I love being outdoors; hiking; reading/discussing: cognitive science, philosophy, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics, physics, current events, hockey, and much more; art galleries and museums; used-bookstore browsing; playing with language; watching hockey; live music; riding horses and motorcycles; and, of course, travel!

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Only one? Impossible! I've hiked the Thai jungle and to the top of Mt. Fuji. I've stayed up all night talking with good friends, then gone to watch the sunrise. I've traveled and met amazing people. I've listened to music that moved me to tears. And those are just off the top of my head...
