About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to know myself, and learn to poi like a boss

ABOUT ME

Raised in the southern USA(Georgia and Alabama) with family roots in Pittsburgh, PA. Born near Atlanta then grew up in Birmingham. Spent four years in Athens, GA, and then four years back in the 'Ham studying medicine. And then 4 years doing psychiatry residency in da 'burgh. Now I’m out southern california since 2017 practicing psychiatry and addiction medicine.

PHILOSOPHY

a work in progress.... existence can be exciting with so much potential for love and positivity while simultaneously being so very fragile. Perhaps that's part of the thrill. Let's make the best of it!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Mostly hosting with some surfing thrown in the mix whenever I get the chance.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

CouchSurfing has far exceeded my expectations! I get to meet interesting, fun-loving, open-minded people and travel vicariously as a host. I've had equally wonderful experiences while surfing. It is a unique utilization of the interweb to connect with others in a tangible way in real life. Couchsurfing manages to restore my faith in humanity again and again.

Interests

Live music of nearly every genre, trying new foods, listening to wild stories, laughing out loud, meeting new people, a little yoga, 'barefoot' running, riding bikes (went on a triathlon kick a little while back), 'sitting', changing the world one decision at a time, dreaming, self-exploring, critically consuming new information, and a good cup of coffee.

Life as an adventure.

Music, Movies, and Books

Not a big movie buff... Momento, March of the Penguins, Caddyshack...

Music, well let's see... recently I've been listening to Tame Impala, Trey Anastasio, Arcade Fire, Beats Antique, Empire of the Sun, Chemical Brothers, Phoenix, Air, Capital Cities, Umphrey's McGee, LCD soundsystem, Soulwax, Reptar, Painted Palms, Phish, Chromeo, Portugal The Man, Pink Floyd, Snarky Puppy, Monsters of Folk, Gorillaz, Pretty Lights, Talking Heads, My Morning Jacket, Flaming Lips, Rodrigo y Gabriela.... just to name a few.

Read Relatively Recently: How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan, The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby, The Fellowship of the River by Joseph Tafur. Gratitude by Oliver Sacks, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for A Hat by Oliver Sacks, Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks, Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks, How to Create a Mind by Ray Kurzweil, Weekends at Bellevue by Julie Holland,The House of God by Samuel Shem, Why God Won't Go Away by Andrew Newberg, The Language of Life: DNA and the Revolution in Personalized Medicine by Francis Collins, Groucho and Me by Groucho Marx, and The Wild Trees by Richard Preston.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was enthralled by The Singularity Is Near by Ray Kurzweil a few years back and now am quite excited about the potential of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Rode a bicycle from Seattle to San Diego :)

and (how about two things?)

Helped amputate a man's legs which had been run over by a train.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am more than happy to share my knowledge of psychiatry, medicine, bicycles, and yoga.

Whenever CSers used to arrive in Birmingham I would find myself transforming into a tour guide spouting off things to do locally and giving a brief history of the city. Now, I'm less informed when it comes to Newport but I'm working on it!
