About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To write an amazingly clever couchsurfing mission

ABOUT ME

I'm a recent Psychology graduate, hoping to travel before beginning a PhD next year. I've travelled a lot, and so I like to meet other travellers and globetrotters! As a host, I am hospitable, and make sure to find something to make a surfer's journey worthwhile. As a surfer, I'm easy to host, and fun to be with. As a person, I hope to be interesting and easy to get along with.

PHILOSOPHY

Aphorisms are great: you can say anything in a concise, arty fashion and people will still take you seriously.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Formerly a surfer, then a host, now likely to become a surfer again.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My experience with couchsurfing has had a couple of bumps in it, but overall, it's been mostly positive - and it's certainly always been more interesting than staying in a hotel! Couchsurfers has given me so much more than a place to stay: they have given me the sort of insight which makes travelling so worthwhile. The same is definitely true as a host as well as a surfer, and I would recommend it to anybody.

Interests

As far as travelling goes, I'm very interested in meeting new people, gaining insights into different perspectives, and encountering ways of living. I enjoy active pursuits such as hiking and long-distance cycling, and try to fit travel around these things. I'm very interested in my University subject, Psychology, particularly autism, crime and substance abuse, but I have a very broad interest in all manner of contemporary issues. I'm not just an egg-head, though, and that's why I find it hard to summarise my interests - I have quite a lot! Ultimately, though, I'd have to say my interest is 'people', which is why I like couchsurfing so much.

I travel like Bear Grylls !
You are a hardcore traveler with a stomach of steel, and you'll eat a grub out of a tree long before you are even hungry. You can't remember the last time you showered, but you still look good.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like an eclectic mix of things, at the moment, my book shelves comprise books by Nietszche,or on things like social interactionist works on developmental psychology, whilst 1984, Brave New World and T.E. Lawrence's 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' hold pride of place. I've a developing interest in American literature as well: The Great Gatsby, On the Road, The Old Man and The Sea, Hunter S. Thompson - it's early days, though. TV and film-wise, I'm pretty enthusiastic about Mad Men,or anything produced by Louis Theroux and Quentin Tarantino. Favourite films include Fight Club, Pulp Fiction & Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I'd say I'm a music fan (who isn't?), and British bands Pulp & The Beautiful South are both particular favourites, although I'm into a variety of genres. Best 'thing' in music? Probably the chorus in 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Filling in these questions.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know a fair bit about psychology, particularly developmental psychology and mental disorders, and I have a great deal of interest in global/current affairs and foreign culture. I also like to think I know enough about the UK and the wider world to give aspiring travellers some useful information.
