About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be the architect of my own fortune - and not exactly a material one - while trying to help others with their architectural works

ABOUT ME

All about me? Alright then ... my story began on a lovely day in November '89, at the maternity ward in a neighboring city, where I saw the light of day for the first time. Uhm ... I hope you don't mind, if I skip the unimportant part?! Anyway, I finished school in 2009 - and I just wanted to live! Somehow I realized, that my image of living did not really conform to the public understanding of the word living. I didn't want to live for small pieces of paper and only to be able to afford cars, houses and a huge amount of other things I don't really need and want anyway. At least not now. I thought about studying languages. But if I want to learn languages, why not just go abroad and speak. I considered studying music, especially the guitar. But why not p l a y guitar and just m a k e music, rather than talk about it and learn a lot of things I do not consider to be very practical.
So I headed for Spain more or less randomly in summer '09 and had the best four months of my previous life. I realized, that traveling seems to be a really good education for me and I made the acquaintance with both the notorious wanderlust and the infamous travel bug. And after being home and working for some time I took off again. And again and again. So for the last seven years I've been working in a forest adventure park for approximately half the year - and during the off-season I've been able to travel the other half of my time - a lot in Europe, a few times to North, South and Central America, Africa and Asia.
And if somebody finds the way to my village while I'm back I hope I have the opportunity to be as good a host as the lovely people I could get to know on my travels.

I proud myself to be quite modest, when it comes to food, accommodation, etc. Once I slept three days in a row beneath a bridge in Finland, another time I spent a night under a truck in Albania and believe me - those two were not among the most uncomfortable sleeping places. :)

PHILOSOPHY

I let Thoreau speak:
I wish to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it has to teach, and not, when I come to die, discover that I had not lived. I do not wish to live what is not life, living is so dear; nor do I wish to practice resignation, unless it's quite necessary. I want to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that is not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proves to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it is sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of, for most men, it appears to me, are in strange uncertainty about it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

That's simple. Trying to be a good guest and - as long as I have the opportunity - trying to be a good host. Sharing what I have and know, as little as it often may be.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Really amazing so far, though most of them were not arranged by using this website.

Arranged over Couchsurfing were:
- Helsinki, with a very welcoming and hospitable girl
- Pärnu, Estonia, on the floor of a place that was intended as an escaping place for married men.
- Riga with two different people - both totally trustful and nice from the first moment
- in Liepaja, Latvia, with a likable girl and her slightly crazy dog
- in Klaipeda, Lithuania, with the most amazing and funniest people I've met in Lithuania. Well, haven't met so many, but you know, what I mean. :)
- in Piechowice, Poland, with a really lovely and warmhearted family

Interests

Explore the mystery called "life", discover gorgeous landscapes and beings, make a lot of music, be delighted about every surprise life provides and trying to be the change, that I want to see in the world.
Currently, I seem to be more of a beginner concerning this topic. But maybe I could learn exactly from you!

  • singing
  • traveling
  • geography
  • languages
  • nature

Music, Movies, and Books

The last two books I really enjoyed were "Into the Wild" by J. Krakauer and "Walden" by H. D. Thoreau - furthermore books by Erich Fromm, Peter Singer, Hermann Hesse, ...

I used to listen to a lot of different kinds of music.
I could list a bunch of bands, but I doubt that anybody would read it.
However, while traveling it's rather the music of the waves, the wind, the birds, etc. I'm listening to. ;)

'There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.'
Lord Byron

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I think of a lot of moments and experiences, that were extremely special for me, but trying to write them down and make them fit in a sentence consisting of simple and worn out words they would probably lose a lot of their specialty.

If I was a good writer, I would write a poem - sophisticated in its appealing structure, beautiful its rhymes and each single line so expressive, that its interpretation could fill pages.

If I was a great painter, I would create a painting - gorgeous in its whole appearance, never-seen its colors and dazzling its beauty.

If I was a talented composer, I would write a symphony - breathtaking and overwhelming its tunes, stunning its melodies.

Alas, I'm not.

So I'm afraid, the few poor lines I've just written, must suffice to express the beauty I've seen and experienced while I've been on my way.

Well, one amazing thing that happened to me was to run out of money on the island of La Palma and making my way back home for three more months busking here and there, totally dependant on the generosity and help of other people.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm keen on learning languages, and learning to play different musical instruments and I'd love it if you could teach me something about nature, plants, animals or show me some unique places. Maybe I got something to teach you as well - probably especially about languages, music, (budget) traveling, geography or nature. And If not, we could at least share the moment, share the time we've got, that is maybe the most precious thing we have to offer anyway.
If there's a guitar within reach I can definitely sing a few songs. :)
