About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Mission...Impossible? My wit. It's endless. Oh joy.

ABOUT ME

Meep. I kind of suck at this sort of thing, but here goes:

My name is Becks (Rebecca, but the only people that call me that are people like my Great Uncle Henry, not that I have one of those, but you know what I mean). My friends and work-peoples call me Becks, in any case. Ha! Case. Beer. I'm punny!

I'm eighteen, almost nineteen (gulp).

I grew up all over the [boring] state of Georgia, but until recently I'd never travelled! It was my chance to take a leap for the first time in my life and I took it. I hated it, but it was worth it in so many ways. Word of advice from a former travel newb: Airports? Sooo not scary. TSA was like bunny security, I've been through worse when my brother got married at the local courthouse. The subway? AVOID AT ALL COSTS. =| The sick, sick man who invented it should be taken out back and shot. Fuck the M train. Fuck it up the ass.

Glitter, ponies, and designer shoes make me yay like a four year old on crack. I love books, animals, and photography. I like meeting new people and hearing their stories, although I'm horribly shy. One of the things I got out of the CS community and my trip was getting over that and realising that OMG I CAN HANDLE MYSELF!1! Eleventyone, I didn't die in the ghetto. +1 for self confidence, right? Or something.

I've been shooting [erm, with a camera, not a gun] for about four and a half years now (God, I can't believe I started so long ago!). It's a major, major part of my life, pretty much a driving force, to be honest. A big reason I wanted to go to NYC is to check out colleges, and see how much I really like city life. Opinion: Rochester was a MILLION times more me. NYC is awesome for the weekend, but I couldn't live there.

Uhm, what else? Oh, I'm mildly insane, kinda quiet, really shy when I first meet people. I can be a motormouth when I want to be, but I love hearing what people have to say about themeselves and even just life in general.

I'm not into parties or nightclubs or things like that. A glass of wine at night is where it's at, on that front.

I can't draw, paint, or sculpt to save my life. I can barely hold a tune, but I love art, music, theatre-- for years the latter was actually the probable career path-- but at one point I was forced to choose between acting and photography...Needless to say, photography won, but drama still holds a very soft spot in my heart.

I'm a world class klutz (my feet have been broken 7 seperate times!)

I don't really know what else to say, to be honest. Oh, um, you should check out the link to my portfolio, I guess.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Erm. I have my noob hat on. That is all.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I had Vegan Thanksgiving in Manhattan, that was interesting. Louise and her friends were awesome and incredibly welcoming and gracious hosts. =]

Interests

Photography (um. Clearly). Reading!! Hugely massive fan of the written word, although I'm the first to admit, I don't exactly go for the classics, and I'm not exactly the deepest thinker. I just like words, and I love to read them. Travelling, art, fashion, seeing new things. Retouching, hanging out with friends, listening to music, watching movies. I'm your average human, I guess.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books-- The Outsiders, Enders Game, Ordinary People, Perks of Being A Wallflower.

Movies-- The Princess Bride, The Green Mile, Evelyn, RENT, Phantom Of the Opera, STARTREK 2009, best movie ever!

Music-- Rock, country, and yes, pop. I know, I know. ::shame::

Artists (because this should so be a category, CS! FOR SHAME!): I don't know anything about traditional art, but art for me is photography, so my favorite artists are Patrick Demarchelier and Steven Miesel. Not big on Liebovitz or Adams. Adams was a visionary in the darkroom but it's boring as hell to look at his work. Liebovitz had some amazing stuff years ago but lately her work is more like that of a digital artist, not a photographer.

Okay. That last part was geeky. Sorry!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of my fondest memories-- and this is funny, because I hate the beach-- is when I was in Destin, Florida. I bought a sub, grabbed a blanket and went down to the beach at twilight and had a picnic in the sand all by myself as I watched the sun go down. I was only there for an hour, but it was one of the simplest, most tranquil experiences of my life. It's something that won't impress many people, but it's real, and true, and those are the only things I know how to be.

The drive from Horseheads to Rochester was one of the prettiest roadtrips I've taken. There's something inherently beautiful about a farm village in a field backdropped on all sides by mountain. The sky feels like it's falling, and the clouds are just so pretty. I cannot wait to move to the area.

Teach, Learn, Share

Oooh! Photography, I'm more than willing to teach anyone the basics, phototime is funtime! I'm also a retoucher and I'm willing to both teach you photoshop basics and/or edit photos for you in exchange for your floor. I promise, I'm actually pretty good at it!

I can also photograph anyone who hosts me as well. =]
