About Me

CURRENT MISSION

travelling the globe indefinitely, connecting, eating, being merry, welcoming and being welcomed

ABOUT ME

Check out my profile on Be Welcome (http://www.bewelcome.org/members/meganritaroberts) and if you want to be hosted by me, please send me a message there. I now pay little attention to my CS requests as I do not want to participate as wholeheartedly in the now much more commercial CS community. I started receiving way too many requests that had no personality, were copy-pasted or mentioned nothing about why the requester wanted to stay. Why not get involved in that community, as it has the true 'heart' of couchsurfing happening! If you want to get in touch with me, I'd encourage you to use that medium first :).

The rest of the information on my profile is not kept up to date.

My life story? I was born in a small town. I lived in a house on top of a big green hill that overlooked vegie gardens, a goat farm and more big green hills. I have grown up to be a calm, interested and friendly person who likes greenery and has a penchant for learning new things!

I'm fascinated by the mundane things in life, like why people buy or eat or do the things that they do. I can be equally satisfied spending a day cleaning my kitchen, reading a book in a cafe, hiking to the top of a hill or dancing at a music festival. I churn through hobbies, picking things up, leaving them behind. As such, I can do a little bit of a lot of things, but perhaps no one thing perfectly.

I'm one of those 'talk a lot and ramble when you're nervous' shy people, so if you're like this too, we can be awkward together :). Couchsurfing community is great if you're like this because you can make friends in creative ways! I like that!

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that everyone has a story to tell that is worth listening to.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

As a host:
I love hosting couchsurfers in my home. I am a relaxed host, and will show guests my local spots and give them tips if they wish. I am happy to host newbies to couchsurfing. When you stay with us, I want to learn about you and your life, your interests. Even if we are not a perfect match, there is always something to be learnt! Hosting people who are happy being self-contained, but open to hanging out is fantastic!

As a surfer:
I have had some great experiences surfing recently, and it's given me a new perspective on this community. I bring my experience as a CS host when I couchsurf. When I surf, I want to learn about my host, their life, what makes them tick and what keeps them living where they do! I love to cook for my hosts if appropriate and treat the experience as a genuine exchange of energy and effort!

As a local:
If you read my profile and think I might have something to show you about my city, then get in touch - I'm always open to hanging out, getting a coffee or a beer or bringing you along to something that I am going to.

Let's see what happens!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couchsurfing has had a major influence on my life. Each time I host, I remember how good it is to connect with people, share moments and explore life together. I have couchsurfed across NZ, USA, Iceland, UK & Europe. What an awesome time.

I do want to make it known that I am a bit uncomfortable with the corporate direction of Couchsurfing, and not quite sure how to respond. I still participate, because I think the community side of it is fantastic. The actual platform, where the organisation is headed and the inklings of profit seeking appearing are leading me to spend more time on BeWelcome. But it's the people that are important, so that's why I'm still here :).

Interests

I take pride in maintaining omnivorousness in the things I like.

cooking, eating, growing, buying (mostly vegan) food, watching people, meeting people, loud or live music, crazy dancing, study, reading, home brews, wild laughter, the outdoors, sustainability, driving a tractor, polyamory, writing letters and keeping penpals, really good coffee, yoga, mindfulness meditation, burning man culture, veganism, agriculture and food systems, nature (plants, animals, rocks, living things), feminism, foraging, hunting, gardens, people and why they do things, quiet walks, geocaching, body positivity, mending clothes, collecting second-hand furniture from the roadside, human ecology, exploring new places, riding my bicycle, reading maps.

Music, Movies, and Books

I currently travel with my quality ukulele and I love to sing and play a little guitar. I really like electronic and contemporary classical. Mostly just all music with heart and soul be fine.

Let's watch Twin Peaks or Stephen Fry together. I love educational or comedic podcasts. I like to read a lot of feminist literature at the moment.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

most days something amazing happens to me!

Teach, Learn, Share

What do you think we could learn from each other?

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am a flexible guest. I love sharing with my hosts and learning about them but am happy to be self-directed as well. I don't mind where I sleep and travel with all my own bedding & towels. As long as there is mutual respect and communication, I'll be happy anywhere. I like to embody the exchange element of CS, whether it's sharing food, drinks, an experience - whatever comes naturally. I clean up after myself and try to clarify expectations to avoid miscommunication!
