About Me

I am from the Detroit area where I spent most of my life until graduation from college. After that, I took a job in Boston with the goal of moving in the northwest or northeast. I spent two years in the area and spent most of my nonwork time going to the pub with friends, going on long bike rides, hosting couchsurfers, and studying way too much for my professional exams.

My company offered me a two year rotation in Hong Kong, which I kept extending out. I ended up staying ut there for5 years, taking advantage of every long weekend to explore southeast Asia. I met my partner Elaine living out there and after my assignment was over we took 6 months to travel. We did two months in the states driving her car across country, two months biking from Amsterdam to Rome, one month in Australia, and one month in New Zealand. We then moved back to Boston at the start of 2018 and have been here since. We are still hosting people but Elaine wants to get up her references so she handles all the requests.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I tried out Couchsurfing when I traveled Europe in the Summer of 2010 and just kept the profile and hosted about 40 people or so in Boston. I hosted a little bit in Hong Kong but with the working hours, I would only see people to hand them the keys and then again to take them back. Plan to get back to hosting next year when I am resettled in Boston.

I find Couchsurfing a great way to turn a boring click and shoot vacation to one that really helps you understand the town and culture of where you are staying. People are genuinely good, despite what you hear, and view Couchsurfing as a true testament to this.

Most of the times I travel use hotels but if I am having a more unstructured vacation, always find couchsurfing to be the best option.

Interests

I am a big history person but don't make the dedication as much as I would like to learn about the places I am traveling to. So generally the city museum is one of the first stops I want to make.

I am also big into stouts and porters when it comes to beer. Always try to get a different beer when I am out.

Lastly, I enjoy running and biking (mostly to help offset my calories from overeating and drinking heavy beers). Always enjoy going for a run when I am on holiday as its a great way to see the city, especially in the early morning before the streets get too busy. Cycling is what I like to do most but not as easy to do when traveling to bring my road bike. I have been on several bike packing trips and loved all of, no matter how cold and rainy it got :-).
