About Me

NOTE: This is ridiculously out of date. My current housemates aren't down with the idea of hosting "strangers", so I'm not currently able to participate here in the ways that I used to. I'm still around and interested in the idea, though. Sooner or later, I'll probably update the rest of this, and I expect I'll go back to hosting again when my housemates shift over who are open to that idea.

CURRENT MISSION

Sing, dance, and be merry.

ABOUT ME

I'm a musician, vocalist and pianist, singing mostly around Boston and occasionally elsewhere. I teach voice lessons from home, and music composition in a couple Boston public schools. I sing with Cantata Singers, Labyrinth Choir, MetroWest Choral Artists, Stämbandet, Arlington Street Church choir, all over the place. I'm a cantorial soloist for the Jewish High Holy Days once a year, and do various other musical gigs that come and go. I substitute at a couple after school programs (one was my day job for about 2 years before I transitioned to substituting, as my musical commitments grew.)

I'm currently refreshing and adding to some computer programming skills I started learning in college but hadn't used in a while. I recently picked up supplemental work, writing iPhone apps for Singing Torah.

Outside of work, I can often be found running somewhere, or climbing a tree. Big life changes coming up: My fiancée Iris and I are learning how to build our own house out of cob (clay, sand, straw, and water). In a couple years, we plan to build our home in New Zealand, raise chickens and goats, grow our own food, and use solar panels for energy. Maybe in a couple more years, you can visit us there!

We're also looking for friends to join us. If you have any interest in building your own home in New Zealand, in a small, sustainable community, please reach out! We can show you how, and help you build. Cost of land will be more manageable with more people, but it should all be quite reasonable.

Whether you're hosting me, or requesting to stay with me, it's very likely Iris will be there, too: https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/keononin
I promise, she's much more interesting than you can see from her wildly out-of-date CS profile. :-p

PHILOSOPHY

This is far too big to cover in a concise little paragraph here. Probably the biggest piece is live and let live. We spend too much of our time competing with each other, and your success shouldn't require others to do less well. Life is about enjoying yourself, sharing yourself with others, learning, and making the world a better place. Although my culture is Jewish, my life outlook aligns closely with Buddhism.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I happily host Couchsurfing visitors here, and I've hosted much more than I've surfed. I will likely be looking for places to stay on occasion as well, though. I haven't really gotten involved with the local CS community, but I enjoy meeting new people who stay here.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've stayed with others through Couchsurfing a few times, and I host others moderately often now. I like meeting new people, and I think this is a great alternative to totally impersonal (and expensive) hotels when you're visiting other places. When I travel (which I do only rarely, due to expense), perhaps I will be able to stay with some of the people I hosted when they were here.

Music, Movies, and Books

Terry Pratchett is my current favorite author. I enjoy a wide range of books, particularly but not limited to fantasy and science fiction.

I only rarely watch movies, but I tend to like ones that make me think, and ones that make me laugh. I can also be a sap for the 'chick flicks'. Favorites include: Amelie, Memento, La Vita e Bella, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Biked down the "world's most dangerous road" in Bolivia: a narrow, windy road with sheer drop on one side and cliff/rock face on the other, connecting La Paz and Coroico. I was there with a choir tour, and we only made this bike trip because our previous plan for the day was blocked by military blockade. The day after we left the country, all the airports closed down, as the government was overthrown in a military coup. I guess we had lucky timing!
