About Me

UPDATE UPDATE

It's now 2018 and I'm still in Melbourne, embarking on an (expensive!) Masters degree... interested to network with people of a business and entrepreneurial persuasion.

I'm slinging beers and studying books for the foreseeable future.

CURRENT MISSION

Start a business I am passionate about that has commercialisation potential!

HISTORY ABOUT ME

My induction to wanderlust occurred when I took a trip overseas at 19. I was living in Bristol (UK) and travelled through parts of Western Europe during 2010-11. I tried to make the most of my youth devoid of responsibility in a globe-trotting fashion.

I thought I would probably just chuck in the towel of societal expectation and travel for the rest of my life. But, NO. I moved to Melbourne to complete a Global Arts degree at Monash Uni in 2013. Highlight was studying on exchange at Fudan University (Shanghai) in 2014. I capitalised on this opportunity, backpacking solo around parts of mainland China, South Korea and Japan.

PHILOSOPHY

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Heres Tom with the Weather." Bill Hicks

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have surfed extensively in Western Europe, UK and Asia. I have hosted sporadically in Melbourne but my overcrowded living situation makes it difficult to be available more.

When my situation changes I will update this. In the meantime I am keen to give recommendations of cool things to see and do in Melbourne... maybe meet up for a beer or coffee.

I love couch surfing, meeting open-minded and friendly people. The immediate openness and trust that you have between people when they let you into their home has shown me amounts of generosity, hospitality and friendliness I never knew existed.

Interests

Learning from people, places and experiences. Pondering possibility, and often over-thinking things. Trying to balance fun/work, theory and practical experience, private/sociable time... My favourite things to do are having fun, music, dancing to a big fat bass sound, writing, eating, sleeping and reading. Other interests include community-orientated festivals and general partying, getting into deep conversations with people I've never met before and breaking down my subconscious prejudices by travelling around the world.

I consider myself spiritual but I try to stay alert to the pitfalls of false new-age spirituality and conspiracy theory blackholes (I try to keep my mind open but not too open, you know?!). Currently devouring wisdom within the Robert Thurman translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead <3

Music, Movies, and Books

Mmm... movies... I love cheesy classics like Titanic and Mean Girls, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Trainspotting, Pulp Fiction, Candy, Boyz in Da Hood.. Too be honest I don't really watch too many movies anymore. I'm much better at wasting hours away when I'm not suspecting it i.e. telling myself I'll just watch one TV episode and it turning into a marathon full-season viewing. This is how my procrastination tricks me.. this why I'm a pro at procrastination.

Actually I just watched The City of God and that was a freakin' sweet movie. So was Dallas Buyer's Club.

My favourite TV shows are Peep Show, The UK Office, Grand Designs, Girls, Tribal Wives on BBC and anything with David Attenborough narrating.

My music taste varies but some of the mainstayers include Massive Attack, The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Erykah Badu, Gang Starr, Chance the Rapper, Fat Freddy's Drop, Burial, Bonobo, Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill.. I guess overall I would say I'm a big fan of hip hop, soul and BASSY beats (with a dose of cheesy pop e.g. The Spice Girls - long live the '90s!)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Burning Man Australia (Burning Seed) 2012 & 2013 - after going for the first time I was left with a natural high for a week- and the ceremonial burning of the man is such a moving experience and brought me to tears - may 2014 burn bigger and brighter! I will get to the one in Nevada one day (if it's not overrun and outdone by then!)

I saw Paul McCartney at Isle of Wight Festival 2010 - the Beatles were my teenage religion so it was truly a dream come true!

Managed to endure an English winter... never again, though!

INDIA! The bewildering sights, smells, sounds and people never fail to excite yet nauseate the senses... It was a challenging, eye-opening, roller coaster of a journey, especially as I headed there solo. Because of my female status and thus my vulnerability ridin' solo, I couldn't really just go 'into the wild' and see where the road and people took me. So I did feel some limitations, but there were plenty of people to meet and unique experiences by following the beaten track. Sussing out my limits is always difficult because I never want to not do something purely out of fear!

Studied at Fudan University, Shanghai.

Spent 9 months travelling in Latin America 2016.
