ABOUT ME

For Maria Panoutsou Theatre, is a research area of the expressive possibilities of human, without denying the educational, recreational
and therapeutic nature. Special dedication shown during the theatrical studies and surveys, the study of motion of the body, approaching different techniques and methods.

She believes that the body movement is completed only by artfully expressed speech.. Body and voice are one. Since 1992 she uses outside of the theatrical text, poetry, prose, and text material, mainly studies the complex springboard floor of Ancient Greek Drama, continues exploring the relationship of speech, traffic, meaning, creating a special play communication code.

For her teaching, is a form of art and she like the roles inherent in teaching, the teacher and student. Her method is essentially an attitude to the material (memory-society) that accumulates daily man artist and
a "way" of psycho physical training for one, as it becomes more personal expression. In her work she uses space, photos, video, art work, nature.

For many years, has conducted workshops emphasizing in an expressive, strong, free disciplined body. Based on her experience with the Classic ballet, contemporary dance, contact improvisation, martial arts, expressive every day movements, folk dance, through Yoga, Grotowski method, she has developed her own method , “A WAY” of exercises for enabling participants to discover the connections between movement and speech, gesture and sound, rhythm and breath.

In addition, to help participants bringing up the essence of each independent identity and help find true, authentic expression. Maria creates a collective memory by introducing her workshop tales and theatre texts from the ancient Greek Culture, and from other cultures too, to the ritual, social, and daily life origins using stories, texts from all kind with item of birth, life love, death, wedding, lullabies, ballads, and healing incantations . Maria is interesting of giving the possibility of a deep study of body expression, removed from the usual pressure from outside and in close contact.

From 1980 that she was admit to study in Lab Grotowski in Poland until her presentation in International Festivals with her work, from the Vienna Theatre Centre , Teaching in Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities, teaching in Utrecht Academy of Arts and in Xenakis Ιinstitute of Music in Athens and from the Greek theatrologists workshops, from the Ancient Greek Drama Research to the Tbilisi Interactional theatre festival as well as her interest in solo performances and monologues, Maria Panoutsou from the very beginning, uses the body as the main instrument for theatre process.

Her back ground is dance and music studies and theatre comes later together with voice studies, the approach of painting, clay art, photography and film studies. Empty spaces surround her performances where she creates with bodies and lights, theatre environments.
In 1982, she founded with the painter and sculpture D. Palma Tomee Theatre Company, a no profit Company of Theatre research and education. With this first production of the show PENTAPTYCHON, a patchwork of modern Greek plays, directed by Maria Panoutsou, the show was honoured by the 8th Festival of Ithaca, the public and the critics, with the following awards: Best performance, Best presenting of modern Greek play Best Director Award for Maria Panoutsou ,first female role, and praise for male Actor and award for the text of the performance.

She Directs the Tomee Theatre Company, Company of Research and Education and the Centre for Contemporary Art Kea.
Teaches kinesiology, improvisation and acting. Lives and works: Athens, London, Kea.
