HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I got to know about the CS through a nut-head cat-loving interpreting-talent friend during an interpreting job. I got fascinated about the idea and wondered how I hadn't thought of that before. I have always done something similar anyways though: travel to places where I know someone so as to have a different and non-touristy experience. The intention here is mainly to receive people, get to practice and learn other languages, show the city I live and the good side of Brazilian people, its costumes, habits, values and whatever else possible as possible and, whenever I travel, have the same sort of help in other countries, aiming to provide and have provided city tours beyond the usual touristy stuff.I guess it is an opportunity also to help people get together and understand one another, and realise that the world - and its people - aren t the mean scary place our media makes it out to be. This involvement may also mean a big step in helping this awareness move forward.

Interests

Different languages, interesting people, different cultures, photography (love photography, to the point of having a dark room at home), good wine and good chats. To make a difference, children, soccer, good literature and photography books, good and different food, nice wine, travel, theater, great movies, trekking, motorbike riding, languages, translation and interpreting (anything to do with them interest me: translation and interpreting is what I do for a living and I am passionate about it; the rare and unusual, fantastic friends and family, unique places, politics (want to run for office some day in my hometown) knowledge beyond the obvious...

I collect movies that particularly affects me and try to watch them regularly...

Music: mostly anything manually and humanly created and performed, with a few rare exceptions, and which is not purely commercial. I am currently enjoying more jazz and cool Brazilian popular music, mainly classic, and some rock and samba... For us Brazilians,music runs through our veins, it s naturally in our blood, brains and bones. We can make music out of anything, our body shake at the sound of anything and anything we do we do it at the sound of music, from the way we talk, through the way we play up to the way we live ...

Books: so many, it's hard to describe. My favorite entertainment and I always have one with me, every time, all the time: in the toilet, when traveling, walking around on my own with a camera (my other favorite pastime) or when I am on a bus, plane or airport somewhere... It s like having a nice person to talk with all the time. Amongst the best so far, from the top of my head: Ensaio sobre a Cegueira and other by Jose Saramago (Long term friendship here, do not get in the way), One Hundred years of Solitude and others by Gabriel Garcia Marques (one of my favorite authors by far), Big Brother is Watching You, Animal Farm,Down and Out in Paris and London (George Orwell, a fixation in my teen rebel years); The one hundred best Brazilian poems and The one Hundred best Short Stories collection (take it with me when traveling and every time I read it the stories and I are different), Casa Grande e Senzala by Gilberto Freyre, a great lesson on how the Brazilian nation was formed (or the idea of it, at least), Raizes do Brasil, by Sergio Buarque, wonderful description of the formation of Brazilian society), Most of the best known Shakespeare's play (Henry V, The Twelfth Night or what you will, Midsummer's night dream, Otthelo, Julius Caesar and toehrs (a great lesson on human beings)... and many many others...I try to read different kinds of books, but have always rejected best sellers, apart from a few exceptions which for some reason or another I have read, but of which I remember nothing... no prejudice though, maybe...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Parts of the Amazon forest in Manaus, the Amazon river in Macapa, weird food in Belem, fresh water dolphins at dawn, deserted river and sea islands all over Brazil, waterfalls at Chapada dos Viadeiros, Indigenous communities, river side untouched-almost communities with 6/7 year old kids who ride boats for days on end with the serenity and responsibility of adults, but who had never seen a laptop, saw a tv a few time only, had never seen a mobile phone; canyons in the extreme cold south of Brazil, Wonderful intertwined sea-coast and mountain range in Rio de Janeiro, the trekking to the Corcovado Mountain, Sugar Loaf, Pedra da Gavea, Petropolis-Teresopolis, dive in Arraial do Cabo, the street samba-block parades (unofficial ones, the so-called "Blocos de Rua" in Rio during carnival), dive and beaches in Bahia, a great barbecue in Rio Grande do Sul, water-fall long jumps in Franca, paragliding in Rio, snow battles in Switzerland, rain in London, cold parks in Wales, Drinking in Germany, museums, theaters, conference, jazz, blues and shopping in New York, munchies in Holland, Bread, wine and love in France, laugh with and at the Portugal-Portuguese, work, traffic and pizza in Sao Paulo, cheese under boiling sun in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, caves in Bonito, a good wine by the fire place with a good female company, several books under a tree somewheres, good wine with some old intelligent and with a good chat people, a nice family dinner with my mom and dad, a car ride in the country with my brothers, a day at a farm hotel with my sister, Museums, wine and tapas in Spain, many memories and many pictures.
