About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Searching for the meaning of life and avoid the need for returning to the corporate world. And attempting to learn Hungarian. Badly.

PHILOSOPHY

Be yourself - nobody can do it as well as you can (and you get to pretend you meant to do it like that, honest)!

Try new things and expect to make mistakes & laugh about them; its the only way to learn and the only way to really be alive!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Just getting involved - joining the local groups and getting involved in some surfing and hosting!

Interests

Travel (of course - guess that's almost a pre-requisite to register on this site, no?)
Eating. I LOVE eating. (apparently got huge bonus points from my girlfriend's Hungarian step-mom for being 'a good eater'. This gives me a very warm feeling of pride.)
Cooking. Closely linked with the eating if I'm completely truthful. Always on the lookout for recipes to add to my admittedly limited range.
How-the-world-works. Its my pet project to discover this and I'm not quite there yet but doing my best. Basically attempting to read everything I can get my hands on and ask anyone who looks like they might know. (Do you know? If so would you mind letting me in on the secret?? Go on, I'll be your friend.)
History. Linked to the above. When I go to a new place I immediately feel the need to find out what it used to be like and why it is the way it is now. That was a confusing sentence.
Running around outside. Not necessarily limited to running itself, this can include a variety of activities also including the wearing of skis, or the donning of a large backpack and woolly hat. Basically outdoor activities. Love being out and about and on the move. And possibly just made myself sound a little bit like a small dog (that wears skis).

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a complete book-fiend, always got something on the go, always up for a good recommendation.. Especially into anything that makes you think or looks at the world through a slightly different lense from the norm. From the profound to the outright ridiculous preferably (not necessarily in that order either..)

Some favourites: Brave New World, Round Ireland with a Fridge, Join Me, Good Women of China, Wild Swans, The Male Brain/The Female Brain, 4 Hour Workweek, Vagabonding, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Lost Cosmonaut, Slaughterhouse-Five... too many to mention

Movies: love anything quirky or that makes you think, especially random foreign-language movies that you love but can't quite explain why

Some more favourites: Das Leben der Anderen, Kontroll, Anchorman, Blues Brothers, Back to the Future, Stranger than Fiction, The Downfall, Threads, Twin Peaks, Zoolander, among others

Music: most music although my music-loving friends enjoy laughing at my pathetic lack of knowledge.. (my girlfriend's the music expert in our household. I know my place.). Particularly enjoy live jazz and music that puts a grin on my face, not such a fan of music-for-the-sake-of-posing!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Spending the day trekking the Great Wall of China and having it to myself for several hours as the sun slowly set...

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you to blow a tune on the trumpet! If there is no trumpet handily lying around I can help you solve a problem or riddle in your life or in your newspaper (I like solving things).
