About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel the world and find my place in it; to get to know new people and cultures.

ABOUT ME

Hi,
I'm Laura. I'm from Argentina and I'm 23 years old.
I love getting to know different cultures. It all started because I saw "Sabrina the teenage witch" and she went on an intercultural exchange and it made me very curious. I always though that it would be nice and interesting to go live abroad with a different family and going to school in a different country where everything was likely going to be completely different. When I was 14 I started to talk about it with my dad and he got really excited cause he had always wanted to be able to do that when he was young so he helped me look at my options. I didn't decide on anything at the time but then my cousin, Lucia, went on a two month exchange to France and that's how I met AFS.
AFS is the organization that took me to Australia on Febreruary 2009 for six months. I stayed in Melbourne with and amazing family and went to school and got to really experience a different culture. I finaly got unerneath the iceberg.
I have to be honest and admit it was really hard for me. I think I convinced myself that I was going to be fine by leaving my home for six months, i sort of unconsciously convinced myself that i couldn't be scared or that i couldn't miss home; so when i got to Australia and found myself missing and being overwhelmed by the situation(being so far away from home where i had nobody i knew) my balance fell down.
But lucky for me, my host family was amazing and they put up with me and my missing and helped me not to miss so much. They showed me so much of Australia(although Australia is so big that it's impossible to say that one has seen it all) and where so good and caring that i made it trough and i brought back a second family.
After i came back i struggled because feeling so sad and so alone (at first) brought up lots of things that where hidden quite down. But it also allowed me to open my eyes about my own country.
Before i left i was one of those people who disliked everything about their country and look up to other places and i didn't really see how much beauty my country has to offer. So when i came back i had a more objective look and i started apreaciating things i had never seen before. Argentina is an amazing country. Politically we're a disaster and far behind mind evolution. But culturally, we've got so much to give, so many wonderful things. And also bad things but that are good to see because they make you appreciate others. In Australia I saw things that i didn't like but i'm glad because it makes me realise of the difference.
What i'm trying to do here is try to explain to whoever might read my profile to understand why i like the idea of hosting so much.
I think that getting to know other people, from different places is fantastic because it opens one's mind so much. At least that's what it is like for me.
I think that the idea of couch surfing is great because if you only get to stay in a city for a couple of days you still get a chance to get a bit of an insight at its culture. And if you're staying longer, it's always great to have someone you can turn to if you need something, of if you want to know anything or just because you want to get to know somebody from a different culture well.
So, that's why i think hosting and travelling is such a fenomenal thing to do.
Now, about me.
I'm brown haired, light eyes, average high and pretty talkative. So, if you choose to choose my couch you're gonna have to put up with my talking. Just kidding, i'm not that bad.
I'm pretty open, anything that one doesn't like can easily be talked. I don't want somebody staying with me being uncomfortable and afraid of telling me. I think not being able to talk about what's bothering one is really awful so please, if you come to my house, know that i'm always up for a talk yes?
I live with my dad in San Telmo neighbourhood. It`s a very nice area, the oldes`t one in the city and quite practical. My mum lives in Bernal, where I grew up, wit my two dogs, Tango and Luna. I have a brother who also lives in Bernal, but on his own.
I think this is getting to long now, so I`ll shut up :)

PHILOSOPHY
Still trying to figuer that out. But i guess it goes somewhere like you have to do what you like and try to look at the world with brigth positive eyes.
