About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Languages, Livelihood, Location!

ABOUT ME

I enjoy learning other languages, writing and meeting new people who inspire me. I feel most alive when I'm with people, whether new or friends, sharing stories and moments, I feel that's all I need in my life...probably until it's not. People say that I'm a romantic, others say I'm too enigmatic, I feel I'm an open book but just quite a long one, perhaps a Russian one. I'm older than when I started Couchsurfing and starting to want to settle down and stop travelling, but not stop hosting. I'll probably keep travelling and welcoming travellers forever, or for as long as it affords me and to those I encounter something that I feel I need.

PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy is changing everyday. Going through a bit of a midlife (well not midlife, but mid-30s) crises (well not crises, but recalibration). It feels terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. With some people I feel like I'm Bill Murray in Lost in Translation, and with others like I'm Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Couchsurfing was fundamental to my life and friendships from my teenage years until my mid-20s. Then somehow life, love and my living got in the way. I miss it, and now I'm back and keen to host and attend events.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hosted lots. Been to lots of meet-ups...

Interests

Food, football, animals, writing, reading, talking, cats, possums, pub quizzes, opossums, dogs, occasionally humans, humanism, hummus (NOT humus), pushing social boundaries, thinking outside the box, living in boxes, opening boxes, planning to pack boxes, bachata, building forts from boxes, singing hymns that nobody knows, boxing, drinking crazy cocktails, learning languages, filling in forms, holding hands. Dancing.

Music, Movies, and Books

I once thought I had cool taste, but that was probably a few decades ago. Always interested across the board though. Favourite film: Forrest Gump (I did say a few decades ago), favourite book: Belle de Seigneur (how is this not better know??), favourite song: changing allllll the time. Big into Dead South.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Nearly knocked over the Secretary General of the UN

Teach, Learn, Share

(this I wrote 10 years ago) I can click my nose, and will be willing to pass this knowledge on at a painful price.

Sadly, it's no longer true.

What I can do is share languages, food, stories, my home, and nights out in the city - I've been in NYC for 6 years now.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Languages, many great stories from my travels and my work at the UN. Just a warm environment and a guaranteed openness.
