About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Would "to find a purpose or a way in my life" be a decent answer?

ABOUT ME

I am a 21-year-old islander born in the middle of the Atlantic. Although relatively unknown, the Azores are a very peculiar place to grow up in. Living in a really small place where the only way to get out is buying a very expensive plane ticket gives you a slightly different perspective of the world, teaching you a thing or two about isolation. I guess it also helped me value even more the whole subject of cultural exchange.

At 16 I went to Lisbon to live all by myself and study film. It was a scary experience at first - it's a huge city for a spoiled boy who used to think walking 20 minutes was way too long! I wouldn't have done any of it differently as I started to cope my dreams with the perks and difficulties of learning to live by myself.

Right now I'm trying to live in peace with the fact that I no longer have a regular school routine my taking some time to myself instead of directly starting a new project or looking for a job. So why not take the advantage of having some free time and travel the Europe I always had the wish to explore from my small house in the ocean when I was a kid?

PHILOSOPHY

Although sometimes I may end up wallowing too much in my own melancholy, I think life is all about trying over and over again with all of the knowledge one carries in its personal luggage. Few are the times when I'm satisfied with my own work (maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist), but I guess it's all about the small things you do, you feel, you get, you earn, blablabla. Oh, and being and making the people who surround you happy - that's the main key to living another day. At least to me.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Although I have a CS profile for a while, I am only now getting the hang of it all. I hope I am not messing up and that one day I will be able to be as much of a host as mines would be!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm looking forward to my first surfing experience as throughout my life I have tried my best to live experiences which implied getting to know people from different countries. I always felt they were too safe environments, though. So I'm pretty much looking forward to taking the small risk of going somewhere where things might not go out as expected, having to communicate with people whose language or habits aren't the same as mine. Let's hope it all goes well, though!

Interests

Film, music and arts in general. Some politics, religion, TV and advertising as well - these ones more from a layman's point of view. I love to listen to interesting life stories, discuss opinions or perspectives as I find the act of sharing between people who live in very different ways inspiring. After all, all knowledge is a plus, right?

Music, Movies, and Books

Ask me this every day and I'll give you a different answer everytime. I'm writing this on my birthday, a couple of hours after my best friend offered me a vinyl of Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible". I kept feeling goosebumps throughout the whole thing! It is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. Still, it's a bit too reductive mentioning just a few. One day I might be listening to Flying Lotus, the other I might be digging YouTube looking for peruvian psychedelic cumbias.

Same thing happens with the movies. Anything goes as long as I feel the director or the story tells me. Each in its own way, from the classics to the modern artsy stuff (including even some modern blockbusters, I'm not picky as long as it's cool).

Although I have some authors I estimate, I wish I had read more books throughout my life. Maybe you can introduce me to some precious readings I've been missing!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It all depends on the whole meaning you give to "amazing things", no? I have made a documentary which has made me, my family and a relative amount of people proud of myself. Maybe it's more of an achievement, but I don't know. We can talk about that later.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, I could say I'd be able to teach one or two things about movies. Some portuguese, as well, from the language to the its culture in general. Some tales from the islands, or maybe some tips on how to keep your sanity while living in one. Still, I would say the best way to teach and learn is to talk, discuss and share on whatever subjects both parts are interested in.
