About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to scratch these feet...

ABOUT ME

Hey

My name is Thom and I'm English Man living in Cymru [thats Wales for those confused].

I've been vegan for the last two years. I wasn't vegetarian before - I even trained as a butcher and fishmonger, and have worked in the process from slaughter to selling. I had a persistant existential / moral dilema that I concluded could only be resolved by veganism. I saw contradictions between my heart and my actions and I haven't looked back since.

I love to cook - even better, I love to feed! I am pretty self sufficient in the house and make most everything I eat. I am one of many children and can only cook for a minimum of 7 people, so there is always plenty ot go round. Be warned, I don't like help in the kitchen - unless it's to top up my wine or pass the smoke, but that's not to say I don't step aside and let other people share their cooking skills with us :-)

I enjoy creativity in all it's forms and welcome inspiration and energy from all sources.

I am pretty laid back and believe in the kindness of PeopleKind. The world is a beautiful place and its children a beautiful face. My instinct is to trust first and always share.

I believe origami *can* change the world, and try to impart what I have learnt to everyone I meet :-)

PHILOSOPHY

Love, share, smile.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I regularly host visitors to Cardiff and thoroughly enjoy connecting with eeach new soul. I have hosted before in all my previous addresses. Not through this website I have to admit, but I often find people on Gumtree, or lost souls after a free party / rave / general weekend in the city. I've even had people staying with us for 3 months+ at a time, and have made some of the best firendships with surfers who have stayed around, so it's been an adventure.

I am currently privelidged to share a beautiful home with two other people. My landlady owns the house and lives with us, and I am so grateful she has welcomed my friend and I into her space. It is through CS that I hope to share this with other people.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I pretty much always Couch Surf when I am travelling, whether that be crashing at a friends place, or meeting up with a friend of a friend of a friend, and even with total strangers I have met at the bus stop / through websites such as this.

Most recently after a Couch Surfing no-show in Barcelona [I shan't name names] I met a lovely Italian barmaid who put me and my friend up for 5 nights in her flat with her boyfriend and their pet crayfish! She was situated right on La Rambla as well. She gave us her key, fed us, partyed with us, and we became great friends :-D People really are compasionate.

I have been hosting a vast aray of people at my home in Cardiff for the last 4 years now. Some have stayed a few days whilst passing through, others have stayed for 3+ months whilst exploring Wales. I had the advantage of two spare rooms so we always had space for more people.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have been on expedition to the Austrian Alps for several years prospecting for new undiscovered caves and potholes. The dream is to find a connecting shaft from the top of the Dachstein mountain range down to a huge cave system called the Herlatz Hole - this would be the longest 'through trip' in Europe, and a really exciting discovery. We know the top connects to the bottom, it's just finding it! In two sucessive years we discovered a new hole, with a strong draft indicating a continous system. We 'pushed' it down to -300m the frst year, and returned to push it down to -1000m. On the way down you pass a glacial layer, where the cave is literally ice, then it opens up into big wide shafts before reaching a sticky thick layer of prehistoric mud - this really takes it out of you as all your equipment gets covered!

I havent been back to the cave since, however I know the expedition team have pushed it further still.

When pushing we take it in turn to lead different sections so that we each get the oportunity to 'go where no man has gone before', riging pitches for the first time ever, raising the temperature of the cave system with your body-heat and carbide light for the first time ever...

I find it extreemly humbling to be deep within our Pachamama, in pitch black, where no-one can rescue you, depending on your team, and discovering brand new corners of our planet
