About Me

I haven't used couchsurfing in a while so my profile is a bit outdated. Basically this is me from a few years ago. Apart from having gone through quite some personal development, which made me a more grounded person, I haven't changed THAT much.

CURRENT MISSION

Trying to be free, to grow as a person and to do meaningful things

ABOUT ME

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/grownups.png

I'm a very passionate guy with lots of big dreams, ideals and ambitions. I am very passionate about contributing to world peace. I firmly believe it is possible to achieve and even though I might not see it become a reality in my lifetime, I would like to spend my whole life working towards it. One of the tools I'm learning now which might help me with my quest is nonviolent communication (NVC) though I like the other name more, connecting communication (CC).

Since December 15th 2012 I have been a nomad by choice. I travel from place to place, using couchsurfing and house-sitting when I'm abroad and staying at friends and family when I'm in my home country. I work as a web-developer on my laptop which of course I can do anywhere in the world when I'm able to find an internet connection.

My biggest dream right now is to be able to combine teaching CC with traveling. So please if you are interested in learning about CC, contact me, I would like to come visit you and give you (and your friends / family / colleagues) free lessons in exchange for a place to sleep.

PHILOSOPHY

Yesterday is gone forever, don't waste today.

The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do.

Something I want to remind myself every day is this. Men, women, genderqueer, white, black, whatever color, Gandhi, Hitler, Martin Luther King Jr., everyone you have ever met or heard of, including yourself, we all have a few things in common. We are all human beings. We can all feel the same feelings. We all have hopes and dreams. We all need love and we are all capable of giving love. And finally, everyone of us, including all the people you don't like, are just trying to live our lives to the fullest using the knowledge we have available at this moment.

I'm a big fan of science, because I very much value the scientific way of thinking. Which means I want to be aware that if an idea has not been tested or compared with nature then it is not more credible than any other idea. And I also want to be aware that nothing can ever be said with 100% certainty, because no matter how often your theory seems to be correct, it could still be wrong. For example, finding one billion green apples still doesn't prove that every apple is green, it just makes it more plausible. Absolute certainty only exists in math.

Because of my love for scientific thinking, I have a lot of trouble listening to people talking about religion or spirituality. This doesn't mean I don't like those ideas, I just don't like how people present them. As long as someone talks about how they personally think and experience things, I'm completely fine with whatever they tell me. So if someone says "when I'm in pain I just ask *insert deity or cosmic thing* for help and then I often feel better" then I'm happy for them. But as soon as they say that their beliefs are objectively true with 100% certainty, then I want to scrutinize their ideas, which is then often not appreciated.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Well one reason is that couchsurfing is very handy when you're a professional homeless guy. And another reason is that it's also just way more fun to live with people than to go to hotels. :-)

Interests

Sports: running, gymnastics, tricking, skiing, snowboarding, snowblading, (kite) surfing, wake-boarding, just about every boarding-sport, diving, skydiving, mountain-biking, many more. Let's just say I like every sport which is a bit scary and looks impressive. (I haven't done them all, but I sure as hell am gonna try them all)

Other activities:
Traveling, surfing couches, hosting surfers, watching movies, having deep conversations, hugging, having cuddly sex, experimenting with empathogens/entactogens and any combinations of all those things.

Politics:
I don't believe in politics. I believe all our physical needs can be fulfilled by using science and technology properly (that's why I advocate the resource based economy) and that all our social/emotional needs can be fulfilled by using nonviolent communication and meditation properly and all variations of those.

Knowledge:
I like to read and learn about topics like neurology, pharmacology, (positive) psychology, nootropics, travel, (quantum) physics, green energy, machine-brain-interfacing (cyborgs), computers and robots, artificial intelligence, how to slow/stop/reverse aging, ways to train your consciousness (like with meditation), philosophy, math, how incredibly smart nature works, nano-technology, yet another application that carbon nano-tubes or graphene can be used for, stem-cell research, gene-modification, really any advancement in (medical) science and many more topics.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies:
Dead Poets Society, Patch Adams, What Dreams May Come, Into The Wild, The Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Hook, Peter Pan, Hooligans, The Godfather, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (AKA Spirited Away), Hauru no ugoku shiro (AKA Howl's Moving Castle), The Last Samurai, Shutter Island, The Golden Compass, any Disney (Pixar) film, Inception, Zeitgeist Moving Forward (watch that one!) and my latest favorite movie is Shortbus.

Shows:
Naruto, how I met you mother, the big bang theory, scrubs, TED, Death Note, lots more but I only watch them occasionally, but when I start watching I will watch 10 episodes in a row or something like that. :-P

Music:
I really can't tell you what music I like or don't like. There's not a super clear pattern and it also depends a lot on my mood.

Books:
I don't read a lot of books... I read all the Harry Potter books several times though. :-P

Food:
I like almost everything, but I love salmon the most. ^_^

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Awesome things that I have done:
A backflip on snowblades
Rock climbing
Met awesome people in my life from whom I've learned a lot
My first two experiences with MDMA during which I have felt (self-)love like I had never felt before, that might have contributed to who I am today.
I stood in the middle of the street on Valentine's day with a blindfold on, arms wide open and a sign saying "I trust you, do you trust me? Hug me".

Awesome things that I want to do:
Meet more awesome people from whom I can learn
Skydiving / bungee-jumping / diving / similar things
Travel the world with (almost) no money
Teach the world connecting communication
Teach the world about the RBE and hopefully see it get implemented some day
Put my body in suspended animation and travel 300 years into the future
When I get there, try to become biologically immortal with the help of new advances in medical science
Become a cyborg so my brain is directly connected to the internet, also disable my amygdala while I'm at it
Start of commune with people who are polyamorous, compassionate and free, based on an RBE or a gift economy
Live in a zero-energy house with a permaculture garden around it (preferably combined with the commune idea)
Become a father
Get a fully electric camper. Something like this but a bit more advanced:

Teach, Learn, Share

I would like to share with you the two videos that have had the most impact on my life. The first one is an introduction of connecting communication and the second one is the documentary that explains what the resource based economy is all about. Both of these videos are really freaking long though..

If you want to watch a shorter video:

What I Can Share with Hosts

I could teach you a backflip or a wallflip if you have good motor-skills. :-P
But what I'd most love to offer you is some introduction into connecting communication. In any way, maybe by giving you a lesson or maybe by helping you processing something that's been on your mind or maybe by mediating between you and someone you're in a conflict with.
