About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Making friends for life - or a lasting impression, at the least.

ABOUT ME

A bit too everything for my own good. I've made a lifestyle out of having one too many balls up in the air - not the warm kind. No concussions so far, at least that I can remember.

Addicted to books - I churn through them like a coke fiend in Vegas. The authors would be none too happy.

Documentaries over war films. Comedies over rom-com's.

Also, I like Ikea. That's pretty random, but I'm an inveterate hacker/designer so Ikea's a sort of graveyard of parts for new projects.

PHILOSOPHY

In work, I've taken the road less travelled. I'm lucky enough to have the opportunity to tackle problems without precedents. In life, I travel for people and architecture. Design comes in a close third.I've made a profession of describing the visual in plain English for over 6 years, but watching the sun rise behind Angkor Wat is as close as I've gotten to speechlessness.I hold the belief that I can get along with anyone if I'm willing to see things from their side.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

By jumping in head-first. There go the front teeth.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Just hanging out with surfers in Singapore. Recently hosted my first couchsurfer. Thankfully, I picked an incredible guy to start with.I got into it through my neighbor who introduced me to CS. Had read Brian Thacker's Sleeping Around a few weeks before that. She's also one of the most active members in Singapore. I must have met at least 20 surfers through her.

Interests

Guilty pleasures - Obscure/esoteric documentaries, reality TV (people are stranger than fiction), techno-babble (philosophy)Architecture/design - I could stare at architecture all day. Even bad architecture holds some perverse thrill.Board games - Settlers of Cataan (my new fave), Monopoly (studied the minutae of this game)New media - Blinking lights, videos, gamification, computer-mediated communication, digitized food, social food, social networksArt, culture, tech, startups, fashion, writing, dance, yoga

Music, Movies, and Books

Tough - very toughBooks - Travel literature (I mean Biddlecombe and Potts, not Lonely Planet!), PJ O'Rourke (the early stuff), David Sedaris (I have a soft spot for a good wit)Films - Indie romantic comedies, ensemble casts, foreign films, pseudo-philosophical horror, pseudo-philosophical sci-fi, documentaries about anything

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Completed a half marathon, and two adventure races.Taught myself InDesign overnight.Won two Startup Weekend competitions.Used to lead a climbing group weekly in Singapore. The one I remember best was climbing in Krabi and hanging off the side of a rock wall with the sea stretching into the horizon. All I thought was, I could have died right then - and I would have regretted not having told the guy I was dating how much I loved him. That was really a change of perspective! And canoeing - had a crazy one in Singapore getting from one end to the other. A big disaster not to check the tide schedule that day :-)
